Forums - Nintendo - Pokemon OR/AS Impressions

So Pokemon OR/AS has been out for about a week in NA and Japan and just a few days in EU. I haven't really much about what people think about the game other than mocking IGN's review, so what do you guys think? Good, bad, terrible, amazing?

Game came out around a bad time for me since it's right around finals, so I am only at the third Gym so far.

But I think it's pretty great! The new graphics look fantastic, it fleshs out Hoenn very well, the models for the Pokemon are really good and really the only problem I have so far is I think the character models look a little silly. The remastered tracks are also well done. I also appreciate all the nods to the original games too like the old maps on the new PokeNav Plus. Speaking of which, I really like the idea of the new features of the PokeNav although I have not put them to any practical use yet.

The game seems to be pretty faithful to the original so far although they did change Steven's cave (Granite Cave) which I thought is a good change since that cave was an absolute pain with all those Nosepasses. But I am not really a fan of the difficulty nerf and the EXP share is seemingly unchanged from X and Y. Also I am not quite sure what is going on with the Battle Frontier right now.

Grr, I wish I could play the game but alas, its on my Christmas wishlist! So, I shall tag this and see what people think

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I really enjoy it. Have been playing for over 40 hours. About to take on the Elite Four in about an hour. Graphics look amazing, and it really brings me back. After playing the original games there are added content in story and actual content. Diving in the game is super clean looking, I actually really enjoy it.

Also love the amount of legendaries and post game content. My biggest issue with teh game is too many HMs. Like seriously, I hate having to have two whole slots dedicated to HM slaves (Tropius and Tentacruel). You get this item later on (new content), which kills the need to ever use an HM. I just don't get why Nintendo is so hesistent to remove HMs and do what that item does instead.

I wish they'd also include a higher difficulty, but that's not the biggest deal for me in the end. Overall, I'm enjoying the 3rd gen much more than what I remembered.

Edit: What was your issue with the EXP share?

About the Battle Frontier...
I heard it's not included :(

They're excellent. I have to say I think Alpha Sapphire is slightly superior because of its atmosphere when Kyogre is awakened you're under heavy rain bouncing off the characters, wind, lightning, and thunder versus when Groudon is awakened and it just gets bright.

Everything's well done except for the frame rate, lack of Battle Frontier, and too much water.

Yeah HMs seem to be a bit of a problem. I skipped over Black and White so I was pleasantly suprised when they buffed TMs for X and Y, I wish they would do the similar change for HMs, in this case allowing you to overwrite them automatically since most of them are pretty terrible.

There's always Nuzlocke challenges at least, although I get a little too attached to my Pokemon xD.

What I don't really like about the EXP Share is my team always feels rather overpowered. I can see where they are coming from, it cuts down on grinding quite a bit. Personally I feel it removes a bit of the strategy of choosing which Pokemon to train or which to give the EXP share to to be ready for the next gym, but that's just me.

I just wish Nintendo/GameFreak, made items that you get through natural progression that make use for the HMs. ie) hedge clippers for cut, some power glove for strength, etc.

I battle everything, so I got level 70 Pokemon before the Elite Four, I love expoloring the whole world, so that's bound to happen.

Also you can turn that Exp share off entirely, it's in the key items.

Edit: by doing the HM thing, they could make some of the HM's TMs... Surf is still very useful as is Fly and Strength for normal moves.

Hm yeah that's true I forgot it's a Key Item. It's also very odd how HMs vary between games, they're almost never consistant except for Fly, Surf, Cut, Strength and Waterfall.  Luckily it looks like they got rid of Flash.

You can always turn off Exp Share, that's what I've done to keep the challenge really.

In general I'm enjoying it, the DexNav is neat and the AreaNav useful, the new sneak mechanic I'd say is pretty cool, and wonder trading six random Pokemon and doing an online battle is still immensely fun. Sure, I'm only a couple hours in but it's still fun!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

It's annoying that I have to until Christmas to play Pokemon OR/AS.. ( along other games). :/
