Forums - Sony - Could the PS Vita be a double generation handheld?

Well, handheld gaming is supposed to be cheaper than home console gaming. A 32 gb memory card would add 15-25 € more to the original price. 1-4gb is fine if someone is never going to use the digital store. But yeah, there's no reason why the XL model doesn't have 8-16gb at least. It comes without AC adaptor already, they should at least guarantee memory space.

Sorry for the confusion, I was actually ranting at Sony over that. Vita is far more digital oriented than the 3DS. Many of it's bigger games are becoming digital only. Some games clock in at 4gb each and it's not possible to buy them on a cartridge. I have a 32gb card and despite over 100 of my Vita games being physical, I'm at a point where I am constantly having to delete things to put new stuff on for the digital stuff and game patches :(

I know the feeling. When I bought my 3DS, I used an 8gb memory card thinking that that would be eough for games and updates because I usually buy phisical. After 3 or 4 games I need to get a bigger memory card or delete something, and I have no idea how to move all the data from one SD card to a bigger one (if that is even possible).

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Not sure what you  mean by too powerful..you do realize that both nVidia Shield Tablet and iPad Air 2 are generation ahead of Vita? And when I say generation ahead I mean PS4 to PS360 jump, not iPad Air 2 to iPad Air jump, which means they can currently run 7th gen console level games...like Trine 2 for example.

By the time next Nintendo handheld launches, that type of performance will be in most, if not every, mid-tier tablets...so they better have at least that kind of performance in their next device.

excuse me?

LMAO, you do know the playstation Vita has the SGX543MP4+ GPU with 128 MB of dedicated Video ram, not to mention not only is this the very same GPU that is in the iPAD III

but also has a much faster GPU clock rate than the iPAD III GPU.

so to say the above nvidia shield, and the iPad Air 2 is  generation ahead is pretty ironic.

I AM BOLO

100% lover "nothing else matter's" after that...

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

In what sense? How many games on your phone look like killzone mercinaries.

Whether modern phones are more  powerful is kind of irrelevant because developers simply aren't going to utilise  that power.

If i really want to play a shooter, I'll go on my Xbox 360 (or you know, Modern Combat 5: Blackout). I have a 3DS and I'm loving that.

You can't carry your xb360 with you. That's the whole point of that game: making a viable console fps experience on a handheld. And it was very well done, nothing to brag about.

Not really, even my cellphone outpaces the Vita.

I'm not arguing the Vita has a bigger audience then the 3DS or mobile, but that system is unique in its space. Specifically in the space of indie games and Japanese titles (action or RPG), the Vita has the upperhand in terms of how its hardware works control wise and power. Theres a reason why we see ports like Gundan Breaker on Vita despite the 3DS's much larger installbase.

Nope. Sony has already pretty much given up on making first party games with it, and most major devs have abandoned it. It might not even make it though this gen.

the psp had essentially the same problem of straddling two console cycles. when people talk about that selling well, they neglect to add that it was the slowest of slow burns. so slow that it was colder than it was hot. i think vita has potential to do this long term, but only if sony takes it seriously. but, uh, given that sony clearly doesn't, i don't see it outliving 2015, or even 2014, as a serious platform with anything other than niche japanese games.

freedom wars will probably be the last high profile release.

It still wouldn't reach that high but I guess I agree

XBOX ONE/Wii U/3DS/PC

RIP Iwata 12/6/1959-7/11/2015

Thanks for all the great memories!

You are excused...to go and check your facts.

iPad 3 has the same, but higher clocked GPU (250 vs 200MHz in Vita).

But just for fun, I won't even compare Shield Tablet/Air 2 with iPad 3...I'll use iPad 4 which stomps both iPad 3 and Vita.

https://gfxbench.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=gfx30&D1=Apple+iPad+Air+2&os1=iOS&api1=gl&D2=Apple+iPad+4&cols=2

https://gfxbench.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=gfx30&D1=NVIDIA+Shield+tablet&os1=Android&api1=gl&D2=Apple+iPad+4&cols=2

Of course, this is for offscreen performance, which shows true potential of SoC - for onscreen, Vita has 6x less pixels to draw than iPads.

It was done well but really the vita design makes it utterly terrible for carrying around IMO. This makes the handheld shooter somewhat pointless when you have a big ass tv in the same/next room. Sticks coming up out of the unit, a massive uprotected screen, and it beign a more expensive piece of tech make me very wary of taking it outside the house, whereas the 3DS clamshell design makes me quite comfortable to throw it in my bag/car/around in general.

This was really sonys problem, give me console titles on a handheld I will only play next to my console where there are better versions of the same franchise.

Quite disappointing as the Vita is a great handheld. If you look back on the Vita sales during its launch weeks you see amazing figures even a few weeks after launch but somewhere along the line sales dipped and only slightly recovered temporarily when there was a price drop or when the Vita Slim came out. I still love everything about my Vita, the graphics, the PS1 classics, the physical feel of the OLED model, the excellent remote play feature, the indies, excellent ports of Mortal Kombat 8, UMvC3, etc and the Vita specific games like Killzone Mercenary, Uncharted GA, Wipeout, Tearaway. Wish they would bring over more PS1 Classics and even old school arcade ports like Snow Bros but I think that ship as sailed.
