Forums - Microsoft - Rise of the Tomb Raider - timed exclusive actually a big deal.

My problem has always been that Crystal Dynamics always intended to bring it to other platforms, so basically Microsoft gave them a ton of money to give me, the consumer, fewer options.

Let me repeat this: they spent money, to give me fewer options. They did not spend the money to meaningfully increase the viability of their own platform but to play keep-away with Sony. This is is anti-consumer practice at its most blatant.

It doesn't even do Crystal Dynamics that much good; TR 2013 was the highest grossing Tomb Raider game of all time and it BARELY made break-even. This company desperately needs to learn how to keep production values in check, and it's going to come crashing down soon. I expect the Tomb Raider after Rise will be a turd, polished with 50 million Microsoft dollars.

But will Rise sell? I honestly don't know. I foresee record returns because gifters are not great at buying for the right console, but I also think it could totally hit 4 million lifetime sales. The exclusive window thing will probably shift it from 60-40 in PS4's favor to 50-50, but it will probably also do that by costing Crystal Dynamics 2-300K PS4 sales.

wow you do know about the Sony's Destiny deal??? Microsoft is actually paying and covering Crystal Dynamics cost of development which should make this game even better. PS4 actually get a better game out of the deal, just timed delayed.

It's a win/win situation...I don't know what kind of mental gymnastic you did to come to that conclusion. It just means PS4/PS3 and even PC fans will have to just wait out because MS was too lazy to make their own blockbuster, action-adventure bonanza and figured "Hey, we got a lot of money. Let's throw it at CD"

Granted, there won't be any "riots" or boycotts (i sure hope not) We will eventually get the game and I think we can wait like grown adults. I probably sound salty (I am, a bit.) but I get it, it's all business. The first TR was really damn good, I enjoyed my time from start to finish, although the support cast were cannon fodder at one point unlike Uncharted's stronger supporting cast.

Were you really going to buy both Uncharted and Rise of Tomb Raider in the same Holiday? PS4 shouldn't care because they are getting Uncharted 4 and Xbox One owner should get a more polished Tomb Raider..... Win/Win

Why would you assume I wouldn't? Let's think about it for a second. I (in general) am a gamer who loves uncharted, an action adventure game. I finish it and I'm hungry for more. The obvious choice is to buy/rent/borrow the new TR game, which while draws similarities from uncharted, its still unique enough to be its own beast. I am not playing the exact same game, instead two distinct games in the same genre.

Truthfully however, I will buy Uncharted 4 on day one. In the event TR would release on PS4 at the same time as on the XB1, i would more than likely RENT (gamefly) it. While I like both franchises, I cannot (financially) afford to buy both in quick succession. With that said, i can at least hope to buy TR by the time it releases on PS4 at a later time. In that regard, i suppose it is a win/win but I don't gurantee myself purchasing the game at any point at all. In a sense, you assumed right about my situation but others probably have the means to buy both.

My main gripe is that I want to play the game as soon as possible and I know plenty of people on the PS4/PS3/PC do as well (since it sold higher on these consoles) It feels like a tasteless move from all parties involved to prioritize xbox fans, given the long history that TR has had with PlayStation, over all others simply because MS has money, a lot of it. It's business and I'm sure Sony has done it too, but it's still  frustrating.

This post is full of contradictions, I'm sure so I'll summarize it. It's not about buying both games on the same holiday, it's simply playing it on the same holiday. Again, it's not a huge deal because at least it is timed exclusive, just don't pretend MS is doing us (PS4/PS3 users) a favor by delaying it on these consoles because money.

Well, any exclusive is "anti-consumer".   At least MS releases a lot of their stuff to PC.   Sony keeps it on their conolse period.

I forgot to mention one aspect of the game that was actually surprisingly good on Xbox One. The Kinect implementation in Tomb raider DE, they were actually pretty good and were adding to the experience. The developer kept it simple and Kinect voice command and gesture worked almost 100% of the time. Switching weapon with voice command worked well even in the middle of a fight and i'm not even sure which button bring up the map since it's easier to say "Show Map". It's a nice bonus since most developer simply ignore kinect or have broken implementation.

I"m not saying they're doing you a favor, but now the reality is PS4 version is timed delayed. But, it's probably going to be superior to the game you would of got without Microsoft paying for timed exclusie and you still get Uncharted 4.

I really, really doubt that. It will have time to work out some kinks and bugs and such but I'm pretty sure TR will have exclusive content (a la destiny) for the XB1. I also don't think the PS4 version will release with additional content like a "Definitive" edition after it gets out on XB1.

ROFL......you talk out of yourt ass...a lot. MS wont have any bearing on this game.

It's a win win situation, SE needs external funds and MS needs competition for uncharted.

Also fans do not even need to buy another console as it will be on last gen and it's only a timed "exclusive"

I didn't say I did not have a problem with Destiny, either, but as someone who doesn't care for a not-Halo-FPS-MMO, it doesn't make me AS angry. It does lean me towards getting a Wii U because Nintendo usually has solid business ethics.

Besides, I stand by my statement; if TR 2013 struggled to break even, MS covering cost of development is, in the long run, bad for Crystal Dynamics. They aren't getting good sales per dollar spent, and need to rethink their development approach. Microsoft funneling money in masks problems by making Crystal Dynamics games polished turds. This is a problem money will make go away, but it won't actually fix it.
