Why would Sony announced passing 360? It would be a hollow victory.

They would announce something if they passed up WiiU or if they hit a 10M milestone like 90M.

Exactly.  We are into next gen, anyway.  They MIGHT say something when the PS3 is pulled off shelves, but other than that, they are done with last gen.  Kinda funny to see some people that need to hang onto the 360 remaining in 2nd.

What about the Ps3 will be supported for 4 or more year after the Ps4 comes out talk?
Right now i think the X360 will last longer than Ps3

And to show support and confidence in ur last gen console, u should say something about further sales
But the Ps4 is just to good and cheap for this to happen. I don't see a 99$ Ps3. And if that won't happen, the Ps3 will not reach 100m for sure. Maybe not even 90m
But i know i should wait for this quarter Ps3 shipped figures, before doing such a statement :D

The 360 will be pulled quite a bit before the PS3 is.  The 360 is still doing decently in the UK, ok in the US, but everywhere else it is basically dead.  The PS3 is doing meh-ok in those two regions, but is still doing ok outside of them.  As far as future sales go, the PS3 is fine.  For the period of April-June '14, MS shipped 1.1M 360s AND XBOs combined.  On the other hand, Sony shipped 800K PS3s (and 2.7M PS4s.)  So, yea, it's obvious which one is selling more and will have the best staying power.

Look at the legs of Ps1 and Ps2
Frist year sales after successor still  15m sales
Second year sales after successor still 10m sales

No we got:
First year 7.1m
Second year below 4.5 for sure

That's what i'm talking about.
And i'm not sure if the Ps3 is still doing okay outside of the US and UK. At least not in mainland Europe, where people prefer to buy a Ps4 for 349€ instead of 199€ - 249€ for a Ps3.
I really would like some actual sales figures for Ps3 hardware. Sadly we only got US numbers.
But as i said before. We have to wait for this quarter shipped numbers to know where this is going.

When did Sony said it's done with the PS3?

Just 2 days ago it had a new system update, it's still getting attention and a lot of games.
360 I don't know, but Sony consoles always stay strong some years after the next system is available, and it won't be different now.

PS3 will FOR SURE go over 90M units, and I still believe it will go for 100M (this I can understand if you don't agree with me).
Countries like mine are just going to jump to the past gen right now, you would be surprised by how many people still have (and buy) PS2's here.
PS3 have a big advantage of being free to play online, and while Sony support this it will get a good ground into countries in development.
Having a PS3 is still the target of a huge number of people worldwide, and it obviously will get price cuts when PS4 start doing this too.

Sony have a really solid brand name with PlayStation all over the world, don't doubt the PS3 will keep selling well for some good years.

Dunno. Never. Not until now. Neither me said that.

Over 90m is still 5m to go. And the Ps3 is selling way below 5m a year right now with proably further decline.
So again, unless a big pricecut and huge sales outside of the big gaming markets happen, this 100m goal will not be reached.
A YoY rise for the Ps3 is highly unlikely. And how much support do u think Sony will put on a 3 million a year selling last gen console, while bening in big financial trouble?

The Ps3 is dead in 2 year form now. April 2016 - March 2017 will be last fiscal year, with Ps3 shipments
I'm talking about new hardware sales here. Not completely dead

You mean the Wii, right?

And yeah, I agree. We won't hear anything other than quarterly PS3 shipments unless it hits the 90M milestone.

Yeah, I definitely meant Wii.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

We know the PSP outshipped/sold the GBA. Sony did not mention it at all, so I agree that they wouldn't mention if the PS3 passed the 360.

I'm not sure they are done with last generation though. PS1 sold for 6 years after the PS2 came out and it sold an extra 30M units, PS2 sold for 6 1/2 years after the PS3 came out and an extra 50M+ units, PSP sold for 3 years after PSV came out an extra 9-10M units. PS3 is still $199 right now and PS4 is only one year old. Going by historical sales and adjusting for the longer generation that happened last time, I'd venture the PS3 for another 3-4+ years and will sell until at least FY 2017/18.

I think Sony is stepping on the balll by not having a final , $149 PS3 revision (dropped to $129 in 2016). There were rumors about a 28nm RSX/22nm Cell refresh that would be coming this year. A Wii sized, 32GB internal storage with an external power brick would sell well for the budget conscious consumer and PSNow already uses modified PS3s with 28nm RSX/22nm Cells so all they would need is a casing. PS3 passing 100M is completely dependent on Sony doing the aforementioned IMO and time is ticking, they would have to have such a final version by Fall 2015 at the very latest. If they don't, I expect PS3 and 360 to finish around 90M+, with PS3 ahead by a couple of mil for an irrelevant 2nd place "victory".

Hey again guys, after some further search, the ps2 last known number as of March, 31st, 2012 was indeed 2.8M off as I said in my last post.

Therefore I removed those 2.8M sales, then I added 1.3M to my ps2 estimate on FY'12 after the discussion with Seece (thanks man!), and removed 1.3M to PS3 for that same year for the data to match.

OP updated with new numbers (I also changed the sensational title ;) )

Prediction: End of 2015 Hardware sales (as of January 20, 2015)

Wii U: 12.1M | XBO: 19.8M | PS4: 36.0M | 3DS: 58.5M | PSV: 11.7M

PS3 is selling good and at solid number.

Shipped 800k the last two quarters.... it is amazing how it is tracking yet.

Fantastic job, we now have largely accurate numbers for previous gen and current LTD numbers for PS2. Your work here is largely appreciated

Actually that's below my personal expectations, but that has a lot to do with the high price of the system at this point.

I agree with parmenides here, as long as Sony plays their card right, the PS3 can sell over 100M, but time's ticking and they have to drop the price to < $149, ideally with a final refresh @28nm RSX/22nm Cell.

PS2 -> more than 110 m consoles sold to consumers in (US+EU+JP+CA+AU). The rest came from emerging markets.

PS1 -> more than 80 m consoles sold to consumers in (US+EU+JP+CA+AU). The rest came from emerging markets.

PS3 -> nearly 70 m consoles sold to consumers in (US+EU+JP+CA+AU). It's the best selling console of its generation in the rest of the world, but needs a price cut to finish the job.

PS4 -> broke sales record in FY13, keeps selling reasonably well in FY14, but the PS2 was from another planet.

if Sony plays its cards right, PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4 can sell more than 100m.

The PS2 will remain the most popular console ever.
