When I seen some steamers playing. I didn't see bonfires, but a secret short cut is available if you find it and unlock its gate. Die any time and it puts you at the beginning. The only way to unlock the secret shortcuts is to make it to the area before the boss and find the secret path that you'll go on encountering more surprises and enemies that leads to the start of the level again. That is when you'll be able to unlock the short cuts gate. It's a hard ass game.
