Your custom controls are tied to your name so whenever you choose your name you'll have your custom controls.

He means having them set as default so you wouldn't have to change the name everytime. The fact it always switches back to Player 1 has screwed me over quite a handful of times.

Yes it's really annoying to have to choose your name over and over again.
