Forums - Sony - Who needs games: PS4's first year [EUROGAMER]

And so we find PS4 facing Christmas with one of the weakest exclusive line-ups on record, and a third-party slate that's not much better. PS4's best games...can almost without exception be played on PS3. True new-generation games...have retreated into 2015... The rest are remasters. Once again: why have we bought these machines?

The Crew says hi! It's coming this year, you can't play it on previous gen platforms and it's trully new gen. It will be one of the most revolutionizing racing games of all times so think twice before thinking about 2014 as a bad year for PS4.

Moreover, Drive Club has just been launched and it's also great. While you won't see revolution in barely anything, it's a very high quality racing game. Best graphics I've ever seen in a videogame, gorgeous landscapes, beautiful racing machines and an immersive gameplay make it a wonderful game. And guess what...you can only play it on PS4. The Crew and Drive Club will pretty much fulfill my apetite for racing games this year.

PS4 also has in 2014 a lot of other great games and many of them cannot be played on the PS3, like Infamous Second Son, EA Sports UFC, Assassin's Creed Unity and Dead or Alive 5 Last Round. Even disregarding the multi-gen launches, PS4 was probably stronger this year than WiiU. Eurogamer writing an article claiming PS4 has no games really tells us something...

Prediction made in 14/01/2014 for 31/12/2020:      PS4: 100M      XOne: 70M      WiiU: 25M

Prediction made in 01/04/2016 for 31/12/2020:      PS4: 100M      XOne: 50M      WiiU: 18M

Prediction made in 15/04/2017 for 31/12/2020:      PS4: 90M      XOne: 40M      WiiU: 15M      Switch: 20M

Prediction made in 24/03/2018 for 31/12/2020:      PS4: 110M      XOne: 50M      WiiU: 14M      Switch: 65M

Pretty much why I see no reason for me to buy one.

That!

He didn't see any reason to get a PS3, so of course he wouldn't care about PS4.

I would have bought a PS3 if I didn't have such easy access to my brother's, kind of made getting my own unnecessary, same as he didn't need to buy his own Wii U when he can play mine.

I think the PS4's biggest selling points in its first year on the market were that A) It was $100 cheaper than the X1, and B), M$ was deemed the Lord of All Evil after E3 2013, and therefore buying a PS4 was the best way to give them the finger.

Had nothing to do with the software really... 8 out of the top 10 best selling PS4 games are multi-platform, multi-generational titles. Its top-selling exclusives 1 year out are launch title KZ: Shadow Fall, inFAMOUS: Second Son, a remastered version of TLOU, and launch title Knack which was also packed in with the system in other regions. It actually has a lower software attach ratio at the moment (3.65) compared to the X1 (3.91), despite leading 2:1 in hardware sales.

Basically, there currently aren't many must-have games for PS4 (same as X1), but more people are picking up the PS4 anyway simply because it's been a hot commodity and its what their friends are playing.

I just want to point out that this underlined sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

Other than that, I believe PS4's best selling point is that it is the best home console.

And why exactly doesn't it make sense?  The PS4 is outselling the X1 2:1, yet it has a lower software attach ratio, which means many of the people who bought a PS4 aren't exactly running out there to buy games for it.

PS4 software as sold over 47 million units, while XB1 software has sold 27 million units, so PS4 has still sold much more software overall.

Now take out all the intensive bundle that happened and plus that USA have a bigger attach ratio and there PS4 haven't outsold X1 2:1 and you would see why we have 47M to 27M.

Yeah, the first year of the PS4 was pretty bad for gamers. They had a bad launch lineup and an embarrassing holiday lineup. Singstar and LBP3 is probably the worst lineup for any console in the past decade.

PSN and PS+ were praised on the PS3 as equal to XBL but this year clearly showed the real difference.

You are very lucky that opinions/tastes can't be wrong even when they are so out of reality.

well Sony already have 10 exclusives lined up for PS4 ready for next year. with an PS Event. The Game Awards and E3 2015 to announce new exclusives that can come out next year. so yeah, this is sony starting slow, but next year they are gonna crush it.

But will the narrative switch to the XB1 when Sony release all those exlusives? I think we all know the answer to that.

it might in the first 9 months of the year. xb1's line up for then looks pretty bad (exclusive wise)

you just forgot that sales and games released during 8-10 months of the year don't matter... MS will always win on most games left to fight on Fall/winter and will have better sales during the period than they have outside and some gamers will be thankingfull that MS let them save money during the whole year to be the preffered customer in that period instead of the peasants that buy consoles when they weren't supposed to.

Neither the PS4 or the Xbox One had a good year. The PS4 had a better year, but it still sucked.

If this is a bad year, I have no chance to keep up with the games in a good year. I guess I'll just have to forget about ever buying an XBox One as I won't have time to play it anyway.

This year I've already bought 10 retail games for ps4, 9 psn titles, and enjoyed a bunch of great ps+ titles. And will buy 4 more retail games on the 18th. Sure the first few months were a bit slow, which I filled with GT6, Left behind, DKTF and Dark souls 2. PS4 has pretty much been used daily since Infamous SS. Oh but that title doesn't even exist according to EG...

Yeah, its impressive that the PS4 is selling so well despite having quite a few problems. Just shows how bad the competition is.

This is true to an extent. Also goes to show how big of an influence the internet community has on the industry, whether the higher ups wanna acknowledge us or not.

This just goes to show how ready for next generation consoles gamers truly were and that last gen lasted too long.

PS4 success without software is baffling but early success is because they clearly have the superior console hardware. 2015 is already set to be PS4 software coming out party.

I wasn't ready at all :P I have a library of games I have yet to complete across the PS3/360/Wii but being the gamer that I am I broke down and got a Wii U and Xbox One 3 months within each other. A PS4 in the near future as well. I keep telling myself that it's okay I'm behind since I have my whole life to catch up.

If the last gen lasted another year, I feel like we would have had even better launches for the Xbox One and PS4. It was very obvious that a lot of the games weren't ready in time but I guess we can't really complain. We did get a pretty decent year considering all the delays and crap.
