Forums - Nintendo - Aonuma: Zelda Wii U looks even better than before, update at E3 2015

Oh shoot i just thought of something. What if the game has a different graphical style that isn't cel shaded anymore and Anouma(?) thinks it looks better? I'd be pretty upset if they change the graphical style to something else.

1080p 30 fps isn't entirely out of the question thanks to the art style allowing for simpler graphics that look great.

They could work some of that Nintendo magic with smart depth of field use.

Personally I'd prefer a rock solid frame rate (30 or 60), over anything, and decent AA instead of 1080p.

It's NIntendo, so you're almost certainly going to get that rock solid framerate; 30fps most likely, going by past Zelda games.

As for 1080p, here's how I see it; why would they go to all the trouble  to achieve 1080p when they could just go with 720p and get twice as much pixel fillrate to use on shaders and other eye candy that would be more noticeable?

Look at Smash Bros U vs Mario Kart 8; that's the difference 1080p to 720p makes to the rest of the graphics. Like with 60fps, when you opt for 1080p over 720p, you're essentially halving the horsepower you have for the rest of the graphics.

Smash bros is a piss poor example. we can clearly see the graphics would be far bellow the alpha zelda u trailer, even with more horsepower from being 720p. The smash devs simply didn't go all out. this is the zelda team we are talking, 1080p with awesome graphics is a possibility.

I don't think a delay is certain, at this point, but I'm not optimistic. Aonuma actually says "We're still at a trial and error stage" (at least that's the translation I've seen), which is why we won't see any more until E3 2015. Without the kind of teatable up-ending that dogged Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess, though, we could see the title in 2015. There's another 11-12 months for Nintendo to get it done, and I wouldn't be surprised if Monolith Soft Kyoto are already helping out. Maybe the main Monolith Soft team in Tokyo (X is nearing the end of development) will be pushed onto helping with Zelda if extra manpower is needed.

Basically I think there are too many unknowns right now. I think it's in Nintendo's best interests to push as many resources as they can at Zelda U. They're setting a dangerous precedent here that means new home console Zelda titles may continually appear too late in their system's life span to actually accomplish anything. How much higher would Skyward Sword's sales potential have been if it had launched late 2010, as planned at the beginning of the year? If Zelda U gets delayed to 2016, especially late 2016, how long is it going to take to get a new Zelda out for the next piece of Nintendo hardware?

THE HYPE IS REAL

                                                                                                               You're Gonna Carry That Weight.

It's really hard to see an "if". the game will come in 2015 and it's already delayed from their 2014 intention.

The level of graphics we saw at E3, which dwarfs Wind Waker HD, and indeed almost anything released on the system so far, rules out 1080p in my view. With even Xbox One struggling to hit 1080p in many cases, I just can't see one of Wii U's best looking games hitting it, especially when they've demonstrated a clear preference for 720p.

Exact resoning I have as well. I doubt it will be anything above 720p/30. Looks fantastic though.

They've demonstrated a clear preference for 720p only when trying to achieve 60fps, which definitely won't be the case on this game, I'd guess. Yeah, 720p 30fps could definitely happen, but I think 1080p is nowhere near ruled out at this point - I don't think they've pushed the Wii U as hard as they can yet. Xbox One struggles to hit 1080p but in most cases it's either because they're aiming for 60fps or just bad optimization.

Oh I agree, it's not even been out for two years yet, it's full power is yet to be fully tapped.

If we look at their 1080p games so far though, they all had a clear reason for being so; WWHD may have had upgraded lighting, textures, and shadows, but it still had a GCN level of geometry and scope. Smash Bros had less detailed graphics than its 720p stablemates. I don't see any such tradeoffs in what we've seen of Zelda Wii U.

BUT: I doubt The Wind Waker HD came anywhere near pushing the Wii U's limits since it was just a port with slightly upgraded visuals, while Smash Bros. runs at a smooth 60fps even with 8 players on screen. Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Smash Bros and stuff like that were never known as Nintendo's most visually impressive games, I doubt they're going all out with these or SM3DW. I think they absolutely can bring Zelda Wii U in 1080p 30fps.

I agree that MK8/3D World weren't hitting Wii U's maximum, they're too early in the system's life for that.

But by shooting for 1080p with Zelda U, they'd be halving the pixel fillrate they have for  the rest of the graphics. Wouldn't they be better off using that power for better shaders and such at 720p?
