IGN has learned that Amiibo figures will work with systems from different regions. Following a firmware update on a Japanese system, we were able to pop an American Amiibo figure onto the Wii U GamePad and register it to a Japanese profile without any problems.

The Amiibo range is Nintendo's entry in the toys-to-life category. By placing a figurine onto the Wii U GamePad, the toys react in-game in a variety of different ways, like adding costumes for your Mii in Mario Kart 8 or loading in new weapons in Hyrule Warriors.

Software is region locked.

Hardware such as controllers have never been region locked.
Only exception is the Gamepad that is so tethered to the WiiU, but it's not sold at shops.
