Forums - Sales Discussion - Amazon top selling games Oct 2014 vs VGC vs NPD

Obviously NPD is not out yet, and VGC has one more october week to report. So this is looking at how good Amazon might be at predicting the NPD top 10 software.

Here's what Oct 2014 Amazon looks like for games in the top 60:

4- SSB 9- Bayo2, 12- Shadow of Mordor PS4, 16- NBA2k15 PS4, 20- Borderlands tPS 360

21- Madden 360, 22- Fifa PS4, 24- Minecraft 360, 28- Destiny 360 (Destiny PS4 bundle is higher, but won't be counted in NPD right?), 32- Fifa PS3, 33- Fifa 360, 34- GTAV 360, 39- The Evil Within PS4, 40- MK8

45- Shadow of Mordor X1, 48- GTAV PS3, 50- Minecraft PS3, 54- TLOUR, 55- TLOU, 58- HyWa, 60- NBA2k15 360

Franchises in order of appearance: SSB, Bayo, Shadow of Mordor, NBA2K, Borderlands, Madden, Fifa, Minecraft, Destiny, GTAV, The Evil Within, MK8, TLOU, HyWa

Fifa is the only franchise that appears 3 times. Appearing twice are: Shadow of Mordor, NBA 2k, Minecraft, TLOU, GTAV, The Evil Within,

12 titles / franchises in all, so in theory the NPD top 10 should be 10 out of those 12 titles. But does that look like the right order? According my quick and dirty look at VGC NBA 2K 15 should be the top seller on NPD with close to 1 million, followed by Shadow of Mordor, then The Evil Within, then maybe Bayo 2 or Madden or Fifa.

I think Amazon will be good for identifying most, if not all the top 10. But I don't think it will do a good job of putting them in the right order. Hy Wa is almost certainly not in the top 10, and 9th and 10th spot will probably be between MK8, Borderlands and TLOU.

Or do you think there will be a few games that are not listed here which will make an appearance in the NPD top 10?

Edits in bold. I missed SSB initially for some reason.

well, on amazon pre-orders count as sales the month they are made in and not the month the game is actually shipped, so for example games that receive a lot of pre-orders and then are in limited supply when they launch might be placed lower on amazon monthly charts then in actual sales charts

Amazon is normally a good indicator, not canon.

That's true.

Amazon is way more inconsistent for Software, than Hardware.

soutpark ps3 Version in top 100 yearly. xb360 Version not listed...
Smash bros ahead of destiny ps4 and xb1 (only if ssmb sold 500k in october and destiny Zero, this would be the right ranking)

right now, it seems to be just usefull for Hardware rankings

I think this is pretty much spot on.  Software on amazon.com correlates to the overall market less well than hardware, but is a decent indicator of what is doing well

Amazon didn't do a bad job of predicting the NPD top 10 software for October. It just didn't get the order of the top 10 right.
