Forums - Microsoft - Is PC gaming important to Microsoft?

They decided to make a console with the first Xbox, and even before that they supported Sega with the dream cast. I wonder if ms makes any money from pc gaming, since they used to make their big ips for pc and Xbox, but for a long time now it's going only to Xbox.

No, it's not. Gaming doesn't do much to drive the sales of their operating system and related software (such as Office).

Whereas, Xbox is a different market where Microsoft were previously unrepresented.

even if they say it is, it isnt really, directx is more a biproduct of os evolution and the support of 3d applications than it is explicitly for gaming, and microsoft made games are generally terrible on the pc.

flight simulator x for example, runs as bad today as it did in 2002, regardless of your pc config

They don't give a sh!t about PC games. But they are very interested in keeping PC gaming being mostly a Windows affair.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Nope. They have completely lost interest in it

Which is a shame, I really don't want to end up with Mac only games

I don't think there is a royalty like with consoles so probably not.

They want to keep their brand everywhere, make it a standard for both entertainment and work, but as first party support is not needed for them to keep their marketshares, they won't waste money on that.

The one pushing pc gaming nowadays is Valve. I think it wasn't for xbox ms would be in the position valve is now, valve is even pushing a new os específic for pc gaming. I just wished ms made their games for pc again, since I'm mo st a pc gamer nowadays (thanks to steam sales).

not directly, at least not today. It could have been if they had the foresight to invest in it, instead of doing their best to kill it in favor of the Xbox for 14 years. Then I could have been.

Wait until next year to judge, when you will see Microsoft re-launch its approach to PC gaming.

Do you say that based on something or it's just an intuition?
