Dealing with D/Cs in competitive online multiplayer has long been a bane of the system, moreso in fighting games which have fewer players, whereas in a game like Mario Kart they can stealth replace the quitting player with a CPU (although they had that solution in Brawl as well, but seemingly they didn't want to go that route here?).
Of course, it was silly for Mario Kart 8 to dock you just because your internet connection shit out for a moment, but how do you tell the difference between network error and player griefing?
