shite is still shite regardless of who makes it.
Why should I give a flying fuck about MS's finacials every quarter as a gamer? Just because a decision is rational doesn't mean its beneficial to me as a consumer, I don't work for Microsoft, why should I care about how much money they make. Especially, when they can't even put that money into supporting a product I paid for.

There are benefits to having a more profitable company (verses one that looses cash) for the consumer.
For Instance... Microsoft can invest more in it's online infrustructure. (I bet you're wishing for THAT now since the PS4's release and you still have to pay for it!) Microsoft are also throwing in Azure servers in Australia now. I won't go into the peering arrangements Microsoft has done via Akami, which are bloody fantastic, resulting in lower latency and higher throughput.
And big franchises, like Minecraft. - 2.5 Billion dropped like it's nothing, if Microsoft plays that particular card right sometime in the future... There could be 10's of millions of children foaming at the mouth the world over that will be at the gates waiting to part with their parent's hard earned cash.
Converesly, if something catastrophic occurs, Microsoft has more financial backing to rectify it and support those customers affected. (I.E. RROD or the Great Sony hack.)

Sure a stable company is better for the consumer, but only if they actually do something with that stability.
Even this gen what have we actually seen instead of talked about.
XBL is slightly more reliable then PSN, basically has all the same features, but XBL goes down less often.
What exactly has been done with Minecraft yet?
Where be the Cloud, Family Share, no Microsoft wants to blame the lack of family share on Consumers, because the lack of always on in the One makes it impossible. The PS4 on the other hand, has PS Now and SharePlay and while they might have their limitations, Its really eyeopening that Sony can do this with a Gaikai aquision, while the only thing MS is talking about with Azure is #Dedicated Servers right now.
And MS sure did rectify RROD with temporary warranties, for like a year, but maybe if they didn't skimp out on solder, everyone could've saved a little money and time.
Right now, the benefits are in potential, but Microsoft has always had more potential then Sony, and that's all its been with them potential what they actually do is probably slightly more US centric then Sony who focuses on WW.
The issue is they don't use it. It shouldn't be a close race in the US, especially after the 360. It should've been dominance. Instead, they misinterpreted their own audience. They saw what happened with the Kinect yet they pushed the Kinect 2 even harder. Now they're slashing prices to stay competitive.
Ultimately, from a consumer standpoint, potential does not matter at all, MS has benefits over Sony by virtue of being better off finacially, but it amounts to nothing, when they don't use it. They fight to compete, rather than exceed. Even despite the disparity of resources. When they said Xbox wasn't core they really meant to say Xbox is a second class citizen who we keep around because of taxes(XBL). Maybe when they treat it better that'll be better for consumers. "Games for Gold" good, "Ea Access" good, "Rotr TE" good, "SO, QB, TF" excellent, we need more of that, right now in the eyes of majority they are basically the same, with preferential differences swinging to one side or the other. And yet MS in all its wealth and health is just even with Sony a company threatened by Bankruptcy for over a decade. Maybe when they were the new kids on the block they could get a pass like the PS1 did, but 360 post Kinect onward looks a whole lot like the MS that abandoned the Xbox because it was "hemmoraging money"
P.S the excuses don't help either:
It's the consumers fault

wait till direct x12
