Where are you getting that $224 million figure from? OP only says 215 million yen.

Net income =/= profit.

The actual profit was only about $2 million.

Net income is profit, lol.

Pretty sure that operating income number is incorrect anyway if they made 24 billion yen in net profit, with 15.5 billion coming from currency gains, the rest has to be operating income.

This is the Neogaf number straight from Nintendo's own earnings report:

Q2

96.7 billion yen revenue
9.5 billion yen operating income
24.2 billion yen net income

Better look their sheets yourself:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2014/141029e.pdf

Even if they made 1 penny in operating income, you do realize NET income is the end of the day take home pay day right? So they did make $224 million last quarter any way you slice it.

I'm pro-Nintendo here, man. I was pointing to the net income of 24.2 bln yen for 2nd quarter, and net income for six months was 14.3 bln yen, since they are to offset losses of 1st quarter. )

The confusion in numbers stems from the way the earnings report is structured, the first operating income number is for SIX months (meaning two quarters) not just the past Q2 (July-September). People are looking at that number and mixing it up as just the Q2 number.

I was thinking something was up because you can't have a $24 billion net profit with $15.5 billion in currency gains ... where's the other $9 billion in net profit coming from if the operating income is only $2 million profit? That means they somehow made $9 billion yen in profit but it wasn't from video games or currency gains.

I think NeoGaf has it right

Q2

96.7 billion yen revenue
9.5 billion yen operating income
24.2 billion yen net income

Well, counting profits/losses cumulatively is a common business practic, and is the way it usually done.

so much for 3ds reaching 100 million. WiiU is still really bad even though its improving, and some people thought it will beat the xb1.

2.68m 3DS has shipped this year. It needs to be more or less flat this holiday or it'll ship under 10m units for the year.

3ds will end around 65 ~70 million i think.

WiiU would be lucky to beat the CG.

no way is 3DS staying flat YoY. not with PS4 and XB1 gaining momentum.

Yeah but in this context it's leading to misinformation.

They made 9.5 billion yen in operating profit the last three months, not $20 million USD.

The actual profit was only about $2 million.

It's 215 million yen loss, not profit.

Numbers in brackets "(215)" means "minus 215".

I don't think PS4/XB1 have really anything to do with 3DS sales, though I'm sure Nintendo would gladly go back to the quaint old days when all they had to worry about was Sony with regards to their portables.

Agree with your 3DS figure.

WiiU will end the year around 10m shipped (even that isn't a cert now). Shipping 4m~. So even if 2015 is better than 2014 (without any real system sellers outside of Zelda, nothing is bigger than MK and Smash after all ...) 15m end of 2015 and then a steady decline. Gamecube is still catchable but I wouldn't bet on it ...

It's a 215 million operating loss for six months total, but it's a 9.5 billion yen operating profit for the last three months, and a $224 million overall net profit from the last three months.

Which indicates Nintendo is bouncing back from a poor Q1 and starting to make a good amount of money again.

GameCube was at about 14 million shipped by the end of 2003, so I think that ship is pretty sailed too.
