Forums - Gaming - Symmetric VS. Asymmetric Sticks: the final battle

My preferred PS3 controller.  Didn't have motion controls, though.

You bought the wrong one. The Power-A Pro Elite had sixaxis motion controls.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I don't think symmetrical vs. asymmetrical fully captures the situation. The placement and proximity of the sticks, within each layout, is also important. For example, I like the symmetrical design of the DualShock 4 but I strongly dislike the sticks bunched up at the center of the controller. It makes the controller less comfortable than the Pro Controller and Xbox One controller, which feature symmetrical and asymmetrical layouts, respectively.

So I think symmetry is less important than spacing and height, when it comes to analog sticks.

I fell the oppisite, i have a pro controller and hate it. it feels like the controller  is gonna slip out of my hands and i much perfer the tighter feeling of the DS4. The Xbox one controller is ok but i just dont like asymmetrical.

Symmetrical of course!

this would be won by however many fans certain platforms have that comes and posts in this thread.

+1 to symmetrical. simply cause i am more familiar with it than I am with asymmetrical.

It's might be close (I haven't voted *edit* because is no poll!).  Sony fans might all vote symmetric.  Xbox fans will vote Asymmetric.  Nintendo fans might go Gamecube and go Assymetric or Wii U and vote Symmetric.  Hell, an N64 fan or two might jump in and vote "Center of the damn controller".

In the end, I just don't think it matters.  As gamers, we're given a task, given the tools, and we go from there.  We can make any configuration work.

Asymetrical, I always used to get a sure thumb on the PS2, because I had to hold my thumb at an angle. PS4 controller seemed to have solved this though with it's longer grips.

Add me on Xbox: DWTKarma

Sym. Only because more controllers are like that. I don't really care. Except sometimes I try to move a joystick that is actually below me lol.

Symmetrical. However, I have noticed that certain games feel better with asymmetrical.

Asymetrical. I like character movement forward to be a push forward on stick. Not diagonal left being up with the thumb. Also better for racing games where left is left.

Either will do, I don't get why some make a big deal out of it.

What I got previous gen was that the 360 controller had amazing ergonomic s while the dual shock 3 felt a bit too loose in some area... And the sale was not as comfortable, its one of the aspects that made me think the 360 was a nice console (even if I never got one, I got the controller for my PC)..

Now with the ds4 and xb1 controllers this is a lot harder to say one is objectively better than the other, and the stick placement makes zero difference for me... So we are left arguing about the merits of the button rumbles and touch pad.... Both of which I find nice, but gimmicky in the end.
