Forums - Gaming - How long til the end of Console Gaming?

So, how many more years before the need for a console goes away completely?

5 Years 7 9.33%

8 Years 6 8.00%

10 Years 5 6.67%

15 Years 9 12.00%

Never! 47 62.67%

Total:74

You mean an entirely digital/streaming gaming industry? I can see it happening, but not for another 2 gens (including current gen).

That thing of consoles extintion is a myth, the demand for home consoles prove this, consoles will prevail if they keep selling, and they are.. so when you see very bad numbers on all competition (if this happens will be on a new gen only) you will know they the console Era will be coming to an end, right now that isn't happening..

Well, PC sales have been in a decline for almost a decade now.  Tablets sales are now in decline.  TV sales are in decline.

I think that console sales will see a decline this generation from the 270+ million of last gen to something closer to 120 million total.  I think that that will be decline enough.  THe problem is that so many other devices allow for a "console like" experience.  Heck, the Amazon Fire TV acts like a console.  Almost any tablet can be connected to a tv and a controller and it is a console of sorts.  Once these other devices are "powerful enough" for the average gamer to play the games that average people play on consoles, the need for consoles will decrease substantially.  Also, if the streaming of games really does take off, there will be no need at all for a console.

I guess, we shall see...

It is near the end of the end....

Go ask Nintendo.

Well they still sold video games in Shin Akiba stores during 2183. They also offer to data protect for 10 extra credits. So, i guess some sort of holographic futuristic console will survive.

Never.

Anyone thinking that people will just stream games instead is just wrong. First off, why aren't those people just going PC only and streaming/downloading there already? Because they don't want to.

Secondly, internet technology just isn't that good in a lot of places. If Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all went to streaming devices someone else would just come along and make a console instead. There is definitely demand for it in western Europe and the US. But also the emerging markets in eastern Europe, South America and parts of Asia. There is no way countries like those could ever go to streaming only anytime soon, probably not this century. So by going streaming only they would be cutting themselves off from most of the world, not really good business sense there.

Finally... look at the music industry... have downloads/streaming killed off physical media there? Not even close. CD sales have decling a bit but they are still at a very high level and are stablising, while older physical media such as Vinyl have actually increased in sales over the last few years. There is plenty of demand for physical content in the music industry, which got into downloads and stuff way before the gaming industry did, so that demand will stay in the gaming industry as well.

Wow, Never is a long time.  Let's assume that the remote village or small town is not part of the market they are going after today anyway.  Heck, China has over a billion people and only 5% can even afford to buy a console, let alone pay for a streaming service.  So, you thought that because the # of people that will have good enough internet will stop things?  Areas with limited or no internet that have any substantial amount of gamers that can afford to buy consoles or pay for streaming are becoming less and less every day.  Remote areas with no internet either have too few people to bring it there or people too poor to buy a console anyway.  Areas that have people that can afford consoles/streaming and big enough populations will have interenet access within the next 10-15 years.  As the poorest areas population demands it, internet will make it there.

You can't assume that every person on erth is a realistic target audience for a console.  It just isn't feasible.  So, when the decision of whether to make another console is made by Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft, they aren't tabulating the villagers in the remote location and trying to figure out if they will have internet or power for that matter.  Like it or not, those people are just removed from the equation.  Companies design products for the mass audience of POTENTIAL BUYERS.

Just my opinion.

It is near the end of the end....

If anyone knows anything about hardware and what it takes to run games at 60fps, then they would also know that console gaming is never going anywhere. It will always be the best and most affordable way to get great hardware backed by quality QA software into the homes of "everyone".

Don't get me wrong, by the time the PS5 comes around there may very well be options to stream every PS5 game albeit at 720p/30fps or less but streaming will never replace dedicated consoles.

well the variety of other platforms don't make one extint, doesn't need to be sony or nintendo just making consoles, others will come too with diferent features, but it's almost like the home tv, or the cinema itself, one thing doesnt make other obsolete.. like i said when is demand will be consoles

There's going to be REALLY Smart TV's soon, which will have the specs to run high-end games. The next industry innovator is going to put your entire entertainment in just the TV. No set-top boxes, or wires, just a really smart TV.
