PACHTER: Sales for Grand Theft Auto V on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be much lower than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360's versions of the game.

http://www.videogamer.com/ps4/gta_5/news/gta_5_ps4_and_xbox_one_sales_should_pale_in_comparison_to_xbox_360_ps3_says_pachter.html

Sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 "should pale in comparison" to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

The last-gen version went on sale last September and has since sold in over 33 million units. The next-gen version is due to go on sale next month.

Pachter made the comments during his latest report, discussing the reasons why he believed Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will see improved sales over last year's Ghosts.

"We expect an increase in Call of Duty sales this year," he said, "due to the free upgrade feature, Day Zero access, less competition (EA's Battlefield Hardline launches in the March 2015 quarter, and sales of Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V on next-gen consoles should pale in comparison to sales of the current-gen version of the game last year), and likely improved review scores driven by a three-year development, up from two-year development cycles for previous iterations."

Earlier this year, Pachter said that the PS4 and Xbox One versions "will have great appeal to those next generation console purchasers who have not yet purchased the current generation version, but we think this is a small subset of next generation console purchasers in 2013 - 2014."

GTA 5 broke entertainment records when it released last year, generating more than $1 billion in revenue within its first three days on sale.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions of GTA 5 go on sale on November 18, with a PC version following in January 2015.

Not a very hard prediction to make, since there are considerably less than 33 million next-gen consoles in existence today.

Surprised nobody covered this already (if they have, my appologies on a duplicate thread):

Well yes BUT, this was a throw away prediction behind a much more significant and less likely to come true prediction: that CoD:AW sales > CoD: Ghosts.

If US pre-orders are to be believed CoD:AW is more likely to continue the franchise's decline in sales than to reverse the trend that started with BO2.

Vgchartz preorder charts are probably even less believable then Pachter. And that is really saying something.

CoD is an install base type of franchise imo. Should do better as the install base grows. Some games can defy that rule, but surely not CoD.

Watch it sell higher

In theory the install base for CoD hasn't changed, it's only spread across more platforms. CoD:G on the Xbox family is at slightly over 11 million. Blops2 on 360 got to 13 million. If you consider the Xbox family that's a drop of 2 million. However we know for a fact that some 360 owners have flipped to PS4. So perhaps some of the drop is compensated by a rise in the PS family.

CoD:G on PS family is 11.6 million. Blops2 on PS3 also hit 13 million. The PS family likely has a larger install base than what it seems because of the 360-->PS4 jumpers. But still we have a 1.4 million drop within the PS family.

The fact that PS family > Xbox family is significant for CoD because that's the first time since the 7th gen started and even though it is a tiny difference it's actually the case within both generations. However the drop in the Xbox family is no where near compensated by a corresponding rise in the PS family. The 8th gen is collectively not pulling its weight in terms of maintaining CoD sales. Though that is particularly true in the case of PS4 with nearly double the install base but only 30% higher sales than Xb one.

My prediction for CoD:AW is a significant decrease in sales on 7th gen, and increase in sales on 8th gen. But the 7th gen decrease will be larger than the 8th gen increase.

This is the most safe prediction he has ever done. Now, I would really laugh my ass off if GTA 5 does sell more than the last gen versions. In that case, fate wouldn't help poor Pachter take a break .
