Nintendo are co-owners of the intellectual property. They have everything to do with Pokemon.

As it was mentioned in the other thread they also own majority shares in the two other companies that own the ip. pretty sure they have to greenlight everything 



Dont mind me, I'm just trying to act dumb like Polygon. And one more thing, Smash Bros is really a third party (Bandai/Namco) game and it will be released on Xbox/PS/Vita/PC/Ipad next year.
