Link in Mario Kart is awesome though.

To me he's so out of place it hurts. I'll never play him.

Yes because a plumber race a turtle dragon has made since all these years. Get over it. When I was a kid and saw some of the crazy things that happened in mortal kombat I just knew to expect what ever crazy thing happens in games. If you can not expect the crazy maybe you are starting to lose the magic of what makes this media great.

Bowser's a Mario character, he fits the whacky tone. Link does not.

If it's only meant for the purpose of an easter egg then I don't mind but superficial inclusion of characters can be off-putting ...

I'm starting to feel that way too, not that it's cheap and lazy. It just gets to be a little to much for me.

Mostly, i don't care, once its free. What really bugs me is when you get samus in everything but a metroid game. You want to use the character, ok, but make a game for it. If not, you will be regarded as another japanese company:

Good point. This especially stings with Samus.

It was silly 18 years ago!!!

Just kidding, it was awesome.

To an extent.

Speaking of SMRPG, that game also had cameos of Link and F-Zero! It's nothing new really!

It's a little excessive, but nothing wrong with cameos.
Now, samus in MH4 is plain stupid, while Link makes more sense.

I think the point is to get the more fanatic fans of Nintendo to buy non-nintendo games, in addition to building up a but of hype from other fans.

Ness was on Super smash bros since the first, but still buggs me that is the only place where it appear in the modern consoles.
