This conversation reminds me of high school in a way. Being in the know of slang. haha. Banning a proper word based on it's repurposed meaning to some people? That's silly in my opinion even if the word is offensive to some people. Perhaps, just sticking to "intent" and "context" when it comes to what's offensive or punishable would be better. :D

It's not as if it was only recently repurposed to mean homosexual, it has been that way for decades now. It also isn't just to some people, it's the dominant meaning of the word in most English speaking countries.

Regardless of the time it's been repurposed, banning the word altogether based on it's slang meaning is just silly. Especially since the word's original meaning was positive. I can understand if the word is used in malicious way but if a person is not referring to homosexuals at all then it shouldn't be an issue. The word has multiple meanings. Context and intent. People should really grow past how it was used in a illiterate way. How is calling a homosexual "happy" offensive?

People use the word feces and it's many variants to describe objects and people. It's rarely ever used in a positive way but it's not banned at all. Of course, you can't call someone a feceshead on here and you'll get in trouble but in general, you can call someone any variant of it and there's not big deal over it. That person probably won't like it but socially, it's an appropriate way to say someone or something is a piece of feces=inferior/bad. It's big piles of silliness.

Where I come from most people including gay people describe things as gay. I'm speaking of my local area not country as a whole. I don't use it on here though because I know I'd be banned.

Unfortunately nobody uses the word for that meaning anymore. There are not very many other ways for somebody to use the word in a gaming forum. What other context could there be for it to be used in a non-derogatory way?

Except it isn't fully banned, only when used in a derogatory sense. Saying something looks gay or something like that is just derogatory. Besides that, you use the example of feces? Well if someone were just to post 'that looks shit' they'd probably get banned for that as well, so it isn't any different.

My point with using feces as an example in my earler post is that feces is overall a negative word compared to gay's original meaning which was onlye  positive. Illetiracy gave birth to the word's other meaning. It's long past time for it's slang meaning to die off.

Well, gay is kinda banned on here and generally, it's not socially acceptible to use at all. If used sparingly, you'll probably be labeled certain things. If I lose a bet on a sales prediciton and post, "That's a load of crap." or "That's crap.", I won't be moderated for it. If I posted, "That's gay." or "That's so gay", I would be banned. That's silly.

That's not silly. When using it this way, you are basically associating the meaning of the word gay to crap.

I'm a gay/happy gamer. Muhahahaha. People are more or less conditioned not to use the word for it's true meaning and to only think of that word in regards to it's slang meaning. If I go around saying that "You are gay." or "You seem gay to me" then I would be in trouble even if I meant "You seem happy to me." It's very easy to misunderstand.

You're basically pointing at a blade of grass when you're missing the whole big picture of a field of grass.

Keep telling yourself that.

Same problem happened with "LOL" going from "Lots of Love" to "Laugh out loud". Just because a word meant something before doesn't mean it's appropriate to use it now in certain contexts because of what most people use it for now.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Did it? I never even knew that! lol

Older generation still hasn't fully caught on. My aunt once texted me and said "Grandma is in the hospital, LOL"
