Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which Company Do You See Leaving the Console Business First?

so?

Sony 79 13.50%

Sony will end up leaving the console business because they keep losing money every year. You need to make money to run a business. And before anyone talks about Playstation division being profitable, think again.

Microsoft, they have tons of cash but not from Xbox. They can go Software only pretty easily putting most games early on PC and possible late ports to consoles.

Sony and Nintendo are tied.

Sony could have a massive failure of a console next gen from who knows what reason, then the corporation would decide to spin it off.
Nintendo has a lot of cash, but is having diminished success with handhelds and is not doing well in home consoles.

Console business isn't some indefinite thing anyway.

I suspect even Sony will stop making consoles after Playstation 5 as streaming takes over.

Gigabit internet will be available in most places by then.

Ninty have been invested since the late 80's and Sony seems just as commited. MS never really seemed to care after the first yr. After 360.

Microsoft:
1) Xbox is losing the most money.
2) They have better things to spend xbox money on
3) It is not a core business for them, and frankly they care the least because of this.

Nintendo (duh) needs its gaming division, and Playstation quickly became (And still is) a core part of Sony.

Most likely Microsoft, especially if they keep losing money on the division like they did last year. They simply won't be able to resist the influence of the shareholders if that happens.

Sony would probably be next because of their generally poor state as a conglomerate, though PS is one of their few profitable divisions. Last would be Nintendo since that's really all they have at the moment. Hardware and the software that sells it is Nintendo's life blood at this point, they would be insane to abandon that model because of the profit potential.

Microsoft definitely.

They're just the company that seems most likely to shift gears, to digital or something. Sony will probably follow suit sometime after Microsoft does, and Nintendo probably won't stop making consoles anytime soon, even after Microsoft and (maybe) Sony stops.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I would say M$ because Nadella openly said once that his wish is to move the company closer to the mobile market and cloud services.

Minecraft might be a proof that they point toward that direction for the future.

Microsoft made money off the xbox division in 2013. What are you guys talking about?

I think Nadella said he wont mind selling off the Xbox brand to another company.
