thats all right and true
and i have no doubt ps4 can mange to do a 100b yen profit year (after the first die shrink. fiscal year 2015 or 2016 probably)
i just doubt it can do a 150b yen profit year (thats 50% more)

Its not sold at a loss at all (or, if it is, its pocket change). Their hardware isn't exactly cutting-egde... or even middle-edge at this point, and they no doubt got a bulk discount from their AMD partnership. If you can build a would-be console for ~400$ OEM, they can and are doing it for less with bulk discounts.
Its not like they slapped on an LED screen and a bleeding-edge 5Ghz transciever on/in their controller...
...Nope.

Nope, it will sale more.
Given its dominance and markets growth world wide.

or 50$ pure profit from 30m consoles a year
thats hell of a lot... |
Is it really?
Lets forget about PS+ subscriptions cause we have no clue how much PSN cost them and what not. So lets focus on just hardware and software. Now lets assume that they break even on the hardware, I know they are actually making a profit on hardware now but lets keep this simple. So that leaves us with teh software.
Sony gets on average $15 as royalties from very third party game sold on the playstation. This is up 100% from the around $7 they got from games in the PS2. Sony gets a lot more money from their own first party titles but lets leave those out of this too. Now lets look at a 30M install base. If 30M people buy ONE third party game per year that would be 30M x $15. Thats $450M in gauranteed profits right there.
And remember, we are assuming that with an install base of 30M people, they are only buying ONE third party game that year. Which is practically impossible. Thats like saying only 30M third party games are sold per year from an install base of 30M people. And by the end of next year the PS4 could very well be at 30M.
I think this is sony just downplaying the expectations again so when the exceed them in "record time" they have something else to brag about. Kinda like how even though they knew pre-orders for their console had exceeded 1.5M before launch and they were tracking to sell over 4M consoles by the end of 2013 they still set their March 2014 expectations at 5M.

I think they should aim for 200 million PS4 units sold! With the right games, price cuts, etc., it is possible!

200 Mil PS4s sold....NEVER....even if it was the only console on the market I still couldn't see that happening.....that is a CRAZY number lol
The absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence...
PSN: StlUzumaki23
I think they can do it. Also I thought PS2 made more money than that.
I'm also surprised that Playstation only represents 10% of Sony's revenue. I guess its not a major division then.
Not only.
PS4 will sell 170 million versus the 155 million of PS2.
Ok Sony. Lets focus on making PlayStation 20% of your revenue. The profits will come in time.
