Forums - Gaming - Which console is the best for indies?

(Sorry, screwed up with the poll.) So, which should I develop for?

PS4 113 47.68%

XB1 5 2.11%

PS4+XB1 4 1.69%

Wii U 71 29.96%

I'd still tell you to go for PC anyway. 44 18.57%

Total:237

This is an honest question.

If you were an indie dev, which console(s) do you think would be the best to put your games on?

No joke about this, I want to develop eventually as a side job (or a hobby). I want to ignore the PC for now, and if I would, I'd go cross-platform between Windows 8 and Windows Phone. But, that's just me.

(And, yes, I know about The Letter fiasco.)

I've spoken to Shin'en, Beautifun games, Dahku creations, and a few other one man indie dev's - Nintendo's eShop marketplace is appealing because of the lack of competition as oppose to the mobile market (more visibility for your game and a higher chance of purchasing). When you are a licensed Wii U developer - you get a Wii U dev kit (it's around $3000-6000 for the licensing), free access to unity and Nintendo will help you with their Web development framework. There are a few conditions that you must obide to in order to qualify as a Wii U/3ds dev, you must have a secure working location (in the past this meant a work office, but a lock-and-key room at your house will suffice), and you have to a sign a NDA which essentially stops you revealing the spec's and you cannot take photo's of the dev kit etc.

I think Sony has the similar conditions, and I'm not sure about microsoft.

I'd say go for either Sony and Nintendo - depending on what type of game you are creating.

No.

@OP also a word of advice, take everything people say with a large grain of salt. What people hear and what really happens (or even what's up to date) are often completelly different.

Also here are the links for registering.

If your only goal is to get your game on consoles, they are the best. Sony is great too, but it takes more work/dedication on your part. My game is exclusive to PS4 so obviously I think it's worth it, but I've been working on it full time for over a year. You don't seem like you have that amount of time to spend.

I have no first hand experience with Microsoft, but for new/smaller guys they are the worse of the three.

Is your game out yet? Can you talk about it? Name? Genre?

On topic

I have no clue, but I think you must think first about the type of people who would buy you game, try to find the shortest way to get to that people... I know it sounds too "common sense " type of advice but with no further info its unwise to give one more specific than this. Good luck.

Proudest Platinums - BF: Bad Company, Killzone 2 , Battlefield 3 and GTA4

I think it depends on the kind of game. If the indie game is a platformer it will probably get a better reception in the Nintendo console.

Yes, but that link has been essentially replaced by the Wii U link with regards to indies. It's only if the OP wants to do 3DS.

For Wii U development non of the stuff in that link applies.

I'm confused now. What doesn't apply now? What I said, has been the general experience from dev's that have been allowed to tell me (without getting into trouble).

No it's not out yet but yes I can talk about it.

Game's VizionEck.

MP is a competitive FPS, single-player is an open world story driven puzzle platformer.

Website needs some work but you can get a lot more info: vizioneck.com

I'm also part of a team working on a second project targeting Wii U, but my role with them is pretty limited atm since I'm so busy working on VizionEck. This second team's game has yet to be revealed.

It's just out of date I guess you'd say.

The option to register as just a wii u indie and skip most of the paperwork in the warioworld link was only introduced a little over a year ago.
