Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

I think Microsoft are out of their minds to pay this much money for Minecraft when its already available for the competition aswell.
They better have some LEGO like strategy in mind, or it definitly wont be worth the money.

I'm looking forward to what Markus Persson will say. It would be epic if the Occulus guys tweeted: "We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. We just cancelled that deal. Microsoft creeps us out."

Would become one of the most legendary moments in gaming.

Note for those that dont know. Notch tweeted the exact opposite on the Occulus facebook buyout.

This is such a weird development to me. Persson has been hostile in the past to corporate giants and Mojang, if memory serves me correctly, has on more than one occasion rejected outside funding and buyout attempts. On the other side, I'm curious what Microsoft plans to do with Minecraft. Does it plan to make Minecraft spin-offs for Xbox or just cash in on the original game's profits and growing media empire?

"Anyone want to buy my share of Mojang so I can move on with my life? Getting hate for trying to do the right thing is not my gig."

Marcus Persson, Jun 16, after all the fuss about Mojang enforcing EULA in order to stop Pay2Win player servers

Maybe he'll speak after the buyout...or maybe he just doesn't care anymore.

Anyway, $2.5 billion do seem insane, but on the other hand, people that don't have kids can't start comprehending how big MC is.

im curious how this thread would be, if sony bought minecraft for 1.5billion (because 2.5 would be out of sonys reach)

I'd be furious, honestly. If Sony had money like that then they should invest it in something that I as consumer gain something from, we consumers gain nothing from this deal.

I doubt it would be quite that dramatic :p MS is Sony's biggest competitor, but they do also have Nintendo and PC gaming to consider. In the short term i can't see them going back on their current set up, especially when it's working so well for them.

In the long run though, yeah, if either MS or Sony were to leave the industry the other would likely get progressively worse. Heck, they're both still here and they still still pull shit every so often (MS more recently than Sony, but we all remember Sony 2005 - 2007. Fun times ¬¬).

Sorry I did word that poorly. To clarify I am not suggesting that Sony would go backwards. But the regular one-upmanship and innovation Microsoft and Sony have brought out in each other would slow very dramatically. For example, Sony wouldn't have anything like the online features they have now if it weren't for Microsoft. Their camera probably wouldn't be available at all, cross-game chat on consoles might be something that never happened.

What are tomorrow's innovations? Who knows. But we're far more likely to find out with both Microsoft and Sony as active players in the hardware business.

I can agree with that ^^

It's why I've never understood some people's obsession with wanting Sony or MS to leave the market... Are they so blinded by their bias that they'd rather own a potentially worse console rather than the other brand existing?

Absolutely, no consideration is given to that at all. Actively willing Microsoft (lately - early last generation it was Sony) to fail is so counterintuitive. It would result in a degrading of our mutual hobby. DRM is an example for Microsoft, a $600 PS3 is an example for Sony. Then you have poor online for Sony, and Games with Gold for Microsoft. They complement each other. The exit of either would hurt gamers more than anyone.

What could they do about the PS versions of the game at this point? Delete it off the e-store and then just inform users that have it that once it's gone off your hard-drive, it's gone? I suppose it depends on the terms of submitting a product to the PSN Store (we know publishers can pull games. Didn't that happen with some Marvel vs Capcom materials, after the Disney buyout?)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I just don't see how this deal would benefit MS. That money could have gone into actually making something new but I guess they just prefer to just buy out games cause they have no choice? Why did they do this? lol

Be even worse, Sony stretching even 1.5B for a single studio and 3 IPs, 2 of which no one gives a shit about. Would spell ultimate doom for sony right now.

Would be a huge shitstorm if Microsoft just pulled the game. Rise of the Tomb Raider would be nothing compared to this. I wouldn't be surprised if MS leaves the game on PSN but stops updating it.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

See, I don't have a problem with healthy competition. One company perfects online gaming, other reacts. One brings motion controls, other two respond. One tries to enforce 24 hour check-ins, other ridicules them until they change their mind.

Healthy competition is always great.

Unfortunately, MS became unhealthy competition for gamers, when instead paying developers to make the game they starting paying developers to withhold the game from the majority of gamers. And when the pattern starts emerging that the worse their market share gets, the more money they throw at companies in an attempt to claw back some customers, the more I get scared that their competition will become even unhealthier and that people, in this case gamers, will continually be getting screwed out of their favorite games.

That's why I think MS has overstayed its welcome in the gaming world, and that it is time to leave that industry, as the industry will only benefit from their absence.
