Sorry I did word that poorly. To clarify I am not suggesting that Sony would go backwards. But the regular one-upmanship and innovation Microsoft and Sony have brought out in each other would slow very dramatically. For example, Sony wouldn't have anything like the online features they have now if it weren't for Microsoft. Their camera probably wouldn't be available at all, cross-game chat on consoles might be something that never happened.

What are tomorrow's innovations? Who knows. But we're far more likely to find out with both Microsoft and Sony as active players in the hardware business.

It's why I've never understood some people's obsession with wanting Sony or MS to leave the market... Are they so blinded by their bias that they'd rather own a potentially worse console rather than the other brand existing?

See, I don't have a problem with healthy competition. One company perfects online gaming, other reacts. One brings motion controls, other two respond. One tries to enforce 24 hour check-ins, other ridicules them until they change their mind.

Healthy competition is always great.

Unfortunately, MS became unhealthy competition for gamers, when instead paying developers to make the game they starting paying developers to withhold the game from the majority of gamers. And when the pattern starts emerging that the worse their market share gets, the more money they throw at companies in an attempt to claw back some customers, the more I get scared that their competition will become even unhealthier and that people, in this case gamers, will continually be getting screwed out of their favorite games.

That's why I think MS has overstayed its welcome in the gaming world, and that it is time to leave that industry, as the industry will only benefit from their absence.
