It's that big financial flop from Activision. I heard it only sold like 6 copies. |
Lol exactly what I was thinking. Bungie and Activision are crying themselves to sleep over all those hundreds of millions

Investors would be more angry if they bought another game studio. They want to get rid of Xbox, not keep pumping money into it.

Its a mediocre new IP. People are often clamoring for new IPs and most are disappointing. We need old IPs to get better, like Destiny. |
Mediocre? Huh, I clearly have to update my vocabulary when a game such as Destiny is called mediocre.
More importantly, you are arguing for MS' financial decision here with some form of subjective "quality" argument that doesn't matter at all in business. Destiny will cost about $500m with everything included (years down the line) and it will profit in a number of days. This acquisition by MS won't turn a profit for years and years.

I didn't say Destiny was a bad investment, I'm saying its a mediocre game.
This acquisition by MS will probably never a turn a profit. Regardless, I'm curious to see what the plan is beyond owning Minecraft.

This could end poorly for MS. And if it does... so what? MS still has plenty of money. Its not like they're betting everything on Mojang. Xbox One is still getting noteworthy regardless of what happens. I'm just curious to see what the plans with Mojang are for them to even consider buying it for that much. |
If it does it was a terrible way to spend money they could have spent on, for example, 20+ other games. People can't criticize their decisions because they're swimming in money?

Yeah and I'm saying it's not. Besides, even if you think it is, there is a good chance that at least one or more of those 20 new IPs would be good...

I doubt it would be quite that dramatic :p MS is Sony's biggest competitor, but they do also have Nintendo and PC gaming to consider. In the short term i can't see them going back on their current set up, especially when it's working so well for them. In the long run though, yeah, if either MS or Sony were to leave the industry the other would likely get progressively worse. Heck, they're both still here and they still still pull shit every so often |
Sorry I did word that poorly. To clarify I am not suggesting that Sony would go backwards. But the regular one-upmanship and innovation Microsoft and Sony have brought out in each other would slow very dramatically. For example, Sony wouldn't have anything like the online features they have now if it weren't for Microsoft. Their camera probably wouldn't be available at all, cross-game chat on consoles might be something that never happened.
What are tomorrow's innovations? Who knows. But we're far more likely to find out with both Microsoft and Sony as active players in the hardware business.

Maybe Mojang had ideas for new IPs. Also, there are new IPs coming regardless of this Mojang business.
In the meantime, I'm gonna play Destiny while I wait for good games.

im curious how this thread would be, if sony bought minecraft for 1.5billion (because 2.5 would be out of sonys reach)
I'm just kinda bitter thinking about how much the games industry could actuallybe made better with that kinda money (as in how many games could get made with it), that's kind of my problem with it. Could it be financially viable for MS? I honestly don't give a fuck. But from a consumer perspective this investment is completely uselss.
A healthy company buys another healthy company, whoopie, now this healthy company can finally create all those things that it could before (be it themselves or through contracts) but possibly exclude masses of consumers from it that weren't excluded before.
If you have money like this apparently just lying around then take it and invest it in games that otherwise wouldn't be made like Sunset Overdrive or (possibly) Scalebound and I'll happily support your system one day, invest it in stuff like this or the Tomb Raider deal and you can honestly fuck off with the Xbox (and this comes from someone that is normally rather neutral towards that brand and MS).
