Forums - Sales - August 2014 NPD Thread! PS4 - 190k, XBO - 160k, Wii U < 60k, PSV < 6k

PS4 is now a full million behind Wii in its first full year (Jan - Dec 07 vs. Jan - Dec 14). Still expecting it to sell about 4m in the US in 2014, vs. >6m for Wii in 2007 and PS2 in 2001.

The X360 & N64 did sell about 4m in their first full calendar years in the US though, so it's still pretty much a cinch for PS4 to top 20m in the US, and 30m is probably a safe bet too.

It will be amusing to see how Sony / Microsoft try to spin their one or two year over year declines in Nov-Dec. I don't see either of them getting anywhere near 1m in Nov, and it may be a stretch for X1 in Dec too.

Looks like sales are more frontloaded now than ever, I wont be surprised if the consoles sell 40% of their yearly sales in Nov/Dec

That makes no sens,e they were front loaded due to supply would have been the same last gen...sales will be big in the fall., please, people with this doom talk don;t have a clue what they are talking about. If ps3 and 360 sold 3-4 million more due to supply early on it's sales in the summer would also have dropped more. Meet demand faster =- slower sales after in slower months..Why don;t people get this?

Wii U looks to 59.7k right now, according to some angles.

Won bet with t3mporary_126 - I correctly predicted that the Wii U's LTD at the end of 2014 would be closer to 9 million than 10 million. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=6673287

LOL, stick to that belief if you want, but if you actually look at the factors behind the launches, PS2 is pulling ahead in North America beating the PS4 soundly for several months in a row and absolutely trouncing its Japanese numbers.

The PS4 is just hiding behind the fact that it had a less staggered launch, so its total to date looks more impressive than it actually is. It's definitely not selling like the PS2, it's horrible in Japan and faltering in North America.

190k for a first August for a market leader is nothing to write home about, it's quite weak.

I'm pretty sure if I dig around I can find more specific numbers but PS2 was at 30 million+ by May 2002:

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/14/technology/14GAME.html

So I'd say it's safe to say they were at 10+ million by August 2001.

Huh, kinda sucks for everyone, then. o.o Always figured that the Xbox One was doing 'pretty decent' and the PS4 'really good,' with the bulk of the Xbox One looking to do poorly being its comparison to the PS4, but I guess this means that the PS4's doing 'pretty decent' and the Xbox One 'pretty badly' if hitting 10 million by that point isn't anything very special.

Soundwave does not know what he is talking about.......................

I was being a bit wry, actually. xP To be honest, even if the PS4 isn't keeping up with the PS2, wouldn't exactly consider that a strike against it, given best selling console of all time etc, etc. Kind of like saying a boxer isn't very good because he can't KO Mohammad Ali. As things stand- with changing markets from decade to decade- the best measure really IS how it's measuring up against its competitors, and the other two fellas really have done teeeeerribly at competing against it so far. Which brings me back to 'If the PS4 isn't doing anything special, the Xbox One must be doing e-special-ly bad' point. =P It's all kind of relative.

I agree, comparing anything to ps2 is silly, that is never happeneing ever again..it had no competition, japan was still a big market, and games like GTA were exclusive to it. Bringing up ps2 is a bad attempt to discredit ps4.....nothing more.

Wii U sub-60k? Well, that's just...sad.

So much for "not overtracked"...

I WON A BET AGAINST AZUREN! WOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So the WiiU is near 60k that is not too bad and the rest of the year there will be some release each month so it wont be completely empty like this summer was

The problem with that link is the lack of relevance to this point (the first August of PS2 versus the first August of PS4). Sure, we can now assume the PS2 hit 30 million 2 years in, but what about the first 9 months? Had it crossed 10 million? I mean, of course, it if hadn't, that means the thing really took off after, but the proper context is missing here.

Aye, like I told the other fella, I was being a bit of a tease with that. xD If I can get a 'The Xbox One Is Doing Badly' out of him, I'll be pretty happy. But comparing two different time periods really is a bit pointless, under the circumstances; the products, and the markets they were selling to, were very different, so I think that even trying to measure 'success' using a console two generations ago as a measuring stick- one that released before so many titles became multiplatform- isn't really going to lead anywhere. If the PS4 DOES hit that number somehow, great. But not keeping up with it shouldn't be considered a failure, if it's still kicking the competition's ass up and down the street.

It seems only Sony guys are always commenting here. Other platform lovers are non existent here. Who knows the reason is?

I exist in my current form, and I post here~

Your claim is false ;)

Then again, I see how this can be true. It's depressing if you're actually invested in the consoles themselves.

I don't understand why people focus so much on sales numbers when profitability matters more.
