20 million for the PSP actually isn't bad at all. It has already sold GameCube numbers in two years time. The bigger issues for the PSP is software sales. For whatever reason the average PSP owner is buying far fewer games than the average DS owner. Actually if you look the PSPs software to hardware sales ratio it's the worst for any major system that I can recall, even conciderably worse than was that for the GBA. You can explain that away with it having other features, and with the emulation factor, but that's really the 800 pound Gorilla in the room. The PSP was supposed to be the hardcore gamer's handheld, but the software sales don't reflect that at all.

That truely is bizarre.....I cannot understand anyone going to extreme of purchasing a PSP and only buying 1 game.  I have 17 games for the PSP and love most of them.....and I'd expect to have another 5-10 by the end of the year.

Even if you bought the wrong game and hated it...surely you'd get another totally different game to see what it like considering you've spent around £180 for it????

Gamers are the wierdest sort.

Piracy my friend, PSP has a big big piracy problem. The only one I know that own a PSP is only playing pirate games.

I personally don't think PSP is doomed and mayby the PSP price drop will give the system more sales. It wont be the first handheld ever, but mayby some game actualy can drive sales. So far it seems that PSP and PS3 has the same problem, a lot of featurs but no games to drive sales.

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

Do you know what does the doomed mean? When I read your posts I think you have some problems with expressing your feelings . PSP will sell at least 40 million units before death so this doom title is extremaly exaggerated. Especially with mixture of your own posts.

22 million units in 2 years...

is that a sign of doom?

In UK psp is the 2 nd best selling console after DS...you clearly saw the article that states a 60% increase in the sales of PSP.

by the end of 2009 psp would reach 35--40 million mark.

psp might not be doing as good as DS but nevertheless it is doing decent all over NA,Japan and Europe.

MODS :- how do these topics whizzz past your eyes?

answer:

as media player psp is second to ipod

as console is second to DS.

in the end is a good choise for ones that cannot afford to buy an ipod and a ds.

if you say the best in each category psp is a failure...

 BUT TRUTH IS :

THAT I STILL SEE PEOPLE USING PSP AS MP3 PLAYER...

THESE PEOPLE ARE CASUALS THAT BUY PSP ONLY AS A GADGET LIKE LATEST MOBILE PHONE..."MAYBE USELESS BUT MUST HAVE...IT'S COOL"

REAL GAMERS BUY FIRST A DS AND THEN IF ENOUGH MONEY A PSP...

BUT MOST AS MEDIA PLAYER...

I'm a gamer.

I want a console that works as a console.

when you deisgn hardware from the scratch todo too many things you have to make decisions.

PSP is bad designed.

look at software charts.

simply gamers don't use PSP as a console.

the reason is that psp si bad designed.

many people buyed a psp,but looking at software charts, majority of people simply use psp only as mp3 player.

I see many many people using psp as mp3 player.

ipod is the best choice for this.

so psp failed against ipod.

GBA2 is on the way.

I think sony will leave portable market soon.

maybe PSP2 will fight against microsoft project of portable pc/console/mediaplayer...

I will continue to buy console that do only the console.

if I want a mp3 player I'll buy an ipod.

attacking nintendo and apple wasn't the best choice.

I agree with alko.

Sony really should pay attention to Apple. Apple has already ruined the Walkman brand. Apple has made Sony a non-factor in the upscale PC market.  Now they are going after the cell phone business. At any time, Apple could get into the entertainment display business and give Sony some serious competition especially with their upcoming LED/LCD displays.

The PSP was doomed by Sony themselves who starved it of support in its early years and chose a joke of a format, the UMD, as its media. Sony fans tried to buy into the PSP but now the Ps3 is showing everyone Sony's true colors, the PSP suddenly has become a little to hard to justify in the eyes of many gamers.

I don't know about you, but 20 million PSP's is far from a failure. In fact, before the DS Lite came out, I recall the PSP outselling the DS. I'm happy that there is actually some good competition in the handheld market, that means that there will be better products and games for those units. Whether you prefer the DS or the PSP, it's good to have the choices available and get what fits you the best.

Get your Portable ID!

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

 not so true...

psp is an half console.

because they designed also to work as a media player.

psp is between consoles and media player.

sad for sony and for us psp is not next walkman as they hope.

add the format.

bluray is on the way on umd.

sony hasn't good history about it look:

Yeah...just an MP3 player.  I'll give you that the UMD was a bad decision.  I play all of my games off the memory stick so load times and battery life are better.  However, calling the PSP a bad console is just stupid.  There are fantastic games both out now and coming this year and after.  The reason software sales are down is piracy.  That's why Sony trys to fix the firmware every month.

However, paying $50 more or so to play music, videos, and store photos is not a bad thing.  It makes the device a much better portable alernative.  Being able to store a few movies, hundreds of songs, and a few games at one time has been awesome.

The PSP can do a lot of things, making it a more complete console than the DS.  What jjseth said IS true, the PSP has been a success despite the ridiculous success of the DS.  This year should be a great year for the PSP as well.  ALKO, you are just wrong.  Also, there is no comparison for UMD and Blu-ray.  One is an inferior format, the other is a superior format.
