Forums - Microsoft - Play Xbox One games without disc in drive???

In the case of Forza I thought you needed at least go to the store and activate the free weekend "voucher".

Interesting it is automatizated. Does it mean that if a game comes as "Game with Gold" you don´t need ever the disc?

lol if a game comes to GWG or EA Access you would have the digital version for free as long as you have gold or EA Access. So you can sell those games if you want.

This is obviously because the game is currently free. If this was reality with the Xbox Ones current features, you could just re-sell the disc and get every game for free.

Good point all. I thought it would be too good to be true.

On a side note, I wouldn't mind seeing a Disc/Digital Code combo like we see with BluRay/Digital HD combos. That might be the way for them to do this right. Sure, people could sell the game, but the way microtransactions go, that might be a good thing. Put it on a per publisher basis and see where it goes.

I know very little about how things like this work but, what if they came up with a way for each disc to have a unique identity so that when you bought it, that disc was tied, via some sort of online authentication, to your profile. This would prevent you from reselling and keeping the game because they could make it so when the game was put into another Xbox, that console would authenticate it and thus, render the original user from having access. You'd still have the data on your console, but it would fail to load and give the notification of say "This game can not be played due to license exchange" or something like that.

Wouldn't that just be a high tech was of physically getting arid of a game?

Overall the free week of Forza 5 for everyone with Gold was a resounding failure what the game really needed is some more DLC but I doubt that will happen since Horizon 2 is coming out soon.

I was just talking about this the other day. This feature being removed because of DRM removal was a big upset for me.

This is similar to Microsoft's plan at the beginning until everybody got up in arms about DRM. They'd have to figure out a way to untie the disc from your profile so you could resell it. Your idea sounds good, but I doubt it could be that easy. I like many others would like to see their original vision brought back. Hopefully they find a way to do it.

That was what the 24h check in requirement was for. People didn't like that nor not being able to freely resell games.

For that to work the console needs to periodically check if you're still the licensed owner, can't play anything unless you're online.
Resellers need to be able check if the game is not currently tied to an account or you could trade it in and still play it until somebody buys it.

Shops could sell digital versions of games with a disc and activation code for people that have internet but can't / don't want to download big files.
Consoles could offer an online auction house for reselling and trading digital games, far easier.

This is similar to what Microsoft was proposing at E3 2013.  You buy the disc merely as a transport for the data.  You have to authenticate your installation online, then that copy of the game is linked to your particular console.  Want to trade/lend/resell your game?  Only if you take your copy to an "authorized" reseller and de-register the copy through a process that MS controls.

Problem is, gamers didn't like Microsoft having that much control over used copies of the game!  Only MS could choose who was allowed to sell used games, and at what price.  Buyers of used copies would also have to pay extra to authenticate their copy.  Go back to articles after the MS announcement to see how well this was recieved. :)
