While I don't believe that WiiU will do as much of a turnaround as PS3, here is what is has going more so than Gamecube that can help it be a "late bloomer".

- GameCube went down to 100$ during the same timeframe as WiiU is now, so WiiU has more space there that can cause a bit more of sales.
- Nintendo seems to be doing a lot of bundles with WiiU which are helping it, while with GameCube it didn't have as many as WiiU.
- Console revision, Nintendo seems to be doing more SKU's now, GameCube only had one, Nintendo had two Wii's, more for DS, and even 3DS got a "new" model, I believe we will see more revision for the WiiU aswell, I believe we might have a Gamepad-less SKU near the end of it's live, just so Ninty can squeeze out as much profit as possible from this gen.

While I don't see it hitting 50 mil, unless amibo or something else really become a huge craze, I believe it can sell around N64's level.

And PS2 was already 170 and few months after GC hit 99 the xbox hit 150.   Lets not pretand GC price was such a big advantage and that wiiu with a cut can do some grand sales. wii Us price advantge is similar to what the GC had.

U is already half the price of its comp and its failing sales wise, stores around me cant get rid of certain bundles for 230.   I got my MBosU bundle for 250.

ninteophiles are quite ardent in their belief wiiu will never rid of the pad.

Ps2 was 80 dollars more than GC, and Xbox went down to 150 the next year. But I was comparing GC with WiiU in terms of sales, WiiU has more room to wiggle a bit, also it could be seen as a better secondary console than the GC was, as GC was competing with Xbox as a secondary console, while this gen it will mostly be Sony/Nintendo or Microsoft/Nintendo for dual console owners as opposed to Sony/Microsoft like it could have been in Gen 6.

And how is WiiU half the price when it sells for 299$ and the PS4 sells for 399? Sure there are retailer deals, but that can also be said for PS4 aswell.

And I'm not a "Ninteophile" as you say, I love Nintendo but im also a multi-console owner and just gave my two cents, I believe that if there ever will be a gamepad-less WiiU it will come very late and only sell to make profit, like Wii Mini, but should help a bit in sales.

Also WiiU has Japan going for it a bit more than GC did, and it could have a bit of a longer lifespan than GC, considering it was the first one out this time.

Wii U is actually shaping up to be quite a good core gaming machine. The fact that it's late really works against it. It needs positive word of mouth, and I think it's still not there. I've never know people to be so negative or apathetic towards a console.

Despite good games, I still think it will end up like the GameCube, if even it can catch up to it. The reason is that it still doesn't have a killer app, a "je ne sais quois" that will make it sell better than GameCube did. GC also had Nintendo 1st party games, and 3rd party, it wasn't really weak compared to competitors, and it was cheap, but it still sold only ~21 million.  And that was at a time when Japan was more into home consoles.  The chips are stacked a bit high against Wii U.

I basically agree with the entire OP. It's nice to see a positive Wii U thread for a change.

I agree with your statement!!

I still believe next year will be Wii U's peak. It just makes sense considering everything I could think of.

Ever consider the comp will be in its second year and dropping software left and right that the wiiu is not getting ?

Worse of a potential PS4 price cut would really not help wiiu sale more.

Or as PS3/360 wined down wiius paltry 3rd party support will be even less.

Or that ninty already dropped thie biggest game Wiiu will get.

So? The Wii did not get majority of the 3rd parties too due to the audience...

Just to clear it - there were 3 Wiis, just like 3 PS3s and 3 X360s :)

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

How is the Wii U different in that case? It's got Hyrule Warriors ect.

Most people, including myself, base their expectations of the future on what is most probable (based on current data), not what we wish would happen. Sure, the WiiU could make a miraculously U-turn (huehue), and go from sub-GC sales to being a moderate success, but it isn't probable.

The WiiU is in its second year and is selling worse at $300 than the PS3 did in its first at $600. The WiiU sold 54k this week. The PS3 sold 92.5k during the same week back in 2007 (its worst year). That should really put things into context.

Because if a console sells poorly in its early days, it will always sell poorly, even once its price drops or it gets system selling software! /s

I think it can be a late bloomer. If it gets one hell of a price cut in February, and the games keep rolling out. Smash is going to get this thing moving even harder than it is now. MK8 is going to continue to sell well, and post-Christmas it could be the game everyone sees their friend playing that makes them get a Wii U. 2015 is it though. If Zelda and all the other games planned don't get keep this thing on fire selling 70K-80K per week... Then it is dead and not going to bloom.
