Forums - Gaming - Square Enix's ability to screw its self over never ceases to amaze me.

4. As for TR I believe about a million people have explained this already but while I too hate the decision myself here is why its not a terrible idea. TR is releasing alongside UC4 in holiday 2015, so it was going to be crushed on PS4 anyway. Now when it launches on PS4 it dosent have to compete with UC4 as much. It will also sell quite well on XBO as MS will push its advertising quite hard to try and compete with UC4 in the holidays. Not only will the TR fans buy it but so will any Xbox fanboys who buy games to support the company, and maybe those fanboys end up TR fans who will buy future sequels. The last plus side is the obvious one, $$$. Tomb Raider wouldnt have come cheap. Side note, if MS are doing the advertising for it in 2015 then SQEX can still advertise its PS4 and PC release so it wont just release and people wont notice it.

This is not a legitimate reason. If your game is being overshadowed by a larger franchise in the same launch window, you reschedule, or you send it out to die. You don't skip the platform entirely, make a deal that will enrage longtime fans, then hope they will come back to you later when you release an enhanced edition.

Hell, Tomb Raider has always been bigger on Playstation.  The reboot sold about 500k more copies on the PS3. It's not skipping one platform, it's spurning it's single largest customer base. Its a short term game with lower risk, but it may have a very negative impact long term for them.

I'm not reading that wall of text, so I'll just post my problem with SE here and if it's already been mentioned, then that's even better.

5.) SE hates Western 3DS users and Western DQ fans. I'm still waiting for the approximately 238 DQ games that have been released in Japan. Still. Waiting.

Im surprised Nintendo never jumped on it. Didnt they publish DQ9 and a few other DQ DS games in the west??

But yeah, such a shame we were ignored on this one

Yes, Nintendo have published DQ games before. Which is even more sad that Nintendo had to step in to get SE to do something about it. I feel like we could blame Nintendo for not publishing these games again, but it shouldn't be up to them anyway.

Yeah they clearly have some big problems Another problem I think is the cost of their games. It took 4m units for Tomb Raider to even break even. What were they thinking?!

Square Enix is a publisher that i really dont care about much, i dont follow up on its news much and i really dont care much for their games, yet they keep amazing me, they keep doing stuff to fuck them self over and over and boy do they do a good job at it. i have 4 examples, all of which are pretty stupid decisions made by SE, and of course, one being the reason you are all thinking about.

1- they keep announcing final fantasy games before the previously announced are released. i think at one point, FF13-3, FF Versus, and FF14 were ALL announced and ALL still in development. even yearly franchises dont degenerate to this kind of stupidity. why on earth would you announce more than one game for the same franchise, you are literally making them compete with each other.

2- They never fucking learn when it comes to announcing games. FF versus was anounced a billion years ago, fast forward a few more light years and the game still isnt close to being out. then at the start of the new gen FFV is now FF15, ok, fair enough. but the morons go and announce it WAY to early AGAIN. they announce it at E3 2013 then SKIP E3 2014! are they fucking idiots? why not skip 2013 then announce it at 2014 instead! not only that, they announce Kindgom Hears 3, great right? WRONG. from what i understand is that the same team of FF15 will be the one doing KH3. so they basically announced a game (KH3) before it even went into full fucking production, that will be made by a team that is still far away from their game at had. its moronic.

3- FF13. out of all the FF games, this one is the most one i seen people dislike, its obviously not popular. so how can Square Enix screw its self over here? oh make another 2 sequals for the most hated game in the franchise and drag your franchise down into the grown. the FF13 saga pretty much killed the mega franchise that was Final Fantasy.

4- After the humiliating crumble of Square's biggest franchise, Final Fantasy, they go around (well technically Crystal Dynamics) and do something right, Tomb Raider Reboot in 2013. the game is a hit with 7+ million units sold. and suddenly Square has a big franchise again on its hands. but then their own damn stupidity decides its time for their anus to recieve another massive fucking. they decide to go timed exclusive with xbox.

now the state of the industry is clear, PS4 is crushing the XB1, PC has proven its self time and time again to be a vaible platform for games (watch Dogs sold 400k week one on PC). and by holiday 2015 both PS3 and 360 will be pretty much irrelevant. and while the argument is that Microsoft handed Square a big pile of cash, that really doesnt matter. it will be a one time thing, and Square, effectivly are skipping putting their game on the fastest selling Playstation console of all time, a platform which has hold the majority of Tomb Raider sales. a platform which is crushing the compitition, in EU its demolishing them. the result? Rise of the tomb raider will sell considerably less than TR Reboot. the next TR after after Rise of the Tomb Raider will also sell less than it would have if they stayed multiplatform.

a publisher cant come by a franchise that sells 7m+ so easily, and it doesnt happen often. and its common sense that when you do, dont fuck yourself over and put it timed exclusive on any platform. specially a platform that is being outsold by the compitition everywhere, and barely has any presence in Europe. and i know, its timed exclusive, meaning that at some point it will come to PS and PC, but it will hurt sales drastically, so it doesnt really matter.

I agree. SE is so stupid it's pitiful. You just want to restrain their arms so they don't punch themselves in the face.

Yeah, they turned to shit, 95% of the things their japanese branch does is mediocre or bad, exception being the odd handheld game once in a while (TWEWY, Bravely Default, Dragon Quest IX) and their management is totally retarded.

It's a pity really, before the merger Squaresoft was absolutely glorious, one of the best developers of the SNES and PS1 era, now I just want them to finish FFXV and Kingdom Hearts 3 and then they can go bankrupt for all I care, that or they make some serious, serious changes.

The reason why Squaresoft had to merge was the signs of retardation were showing even then.  They had trouble getting FFX out and even when it came out it was a buggy mess especially near the end. The games that were released during the development of FFX were not safe bets they were all games that were not RPG's, and at that point Squaresoft had an extensive history of games "failing" that were not in "their" genre of dominance. (i.e. Square was basically on one genre pony)

They blew almost their entire business on creating a studio and then making the world worse B movie with an AAA budget with great actors who just phoned in their parts.

If anything Squaresoft brought Enix down in this deal.

I'm not saying that Enix is at fault here or anything like that, just that prior to the merger they just made way, way better games. Squaresoft did some extremely stupid shit as well, I agree.

The whole 'Microsoft's deal with RotTR being like the deal with Dead Rising 3' brings up a potentially troubling new wrinkle that suggests while, yes, the game will be releasing on PC sooner or later, it might not come to PS4 at all. (Because Spencer DID say the exclusivity had a duration... but I don't think he made it clear that it would come to every platform in time, which means that a PS4 port could never materialize, and he wouldn't be lying.) Now, to be clear, if this is because Microsoft funded the bulk of its production, etc, similar to Bayonetta 2, then all right, fair enough, that's significantly more understandable than just buying an already-funded game. But it does turn the scrutiny back to Square Enix, who somehow managed to fund a reboot that sold three and a half million copies in its first MONTH, and yet was still considered a financial disappointment because they were shooting for between five and six. And the troubling question of 'What happens to a third installment? Will there even BE a third installment?'

Going, for a second, under the assumption that a PS4 version never appears, and that the game was funded by Microsoft more than Square Enix... well, a third installment only seems likely to happen if Microsoft funds it again. And they only seem likely to fund it again of RotTR does what they're hoping it will do- in this case, probably move consoles. On the surface, the property seems ideal- a more-popular-on-Playstation franchise being just what might convert Playstation fans- but recent events suggest it is nooot going to work out that way.

But if Square Enix does decide to throw money at a third game, what... 'Sorry, Playstation fans, you will NEVER get to play our second game, buuuut now you can buy our third one!" Yeah. THAT seems like it'll go over very well, and if they don't get their budget under control, the inevitable damage done to sales on Playstation- which, before this, was the most interested platform for their Tomb Raider games- will just turn a third title into another disappointment.

So, yeah. Kind of think that if RotTR ends up being Only-Xbox-One-And-PC, then the series as a whole will either remain Only-Xbox-One-And-PC, or generate a financially disappointing third installment that kills the chances of a fourth.

In conclusion; Goddamnit Square Enix. -_-

If it is correct what all people are saying that SE is utterly stupid and will go down at some point you should be happy.

That means their IPs get sold to other publishers. Isn't that what you all want?

I don't want them to go down, though. Their handheld efforts at least let me keep my trust in SqEnix. Besides, I don't think they'll go down anytime soon. They'll downsize to handheld-only, perhaps, but not go away entirely.
