Forums - Sony - Sony closes MLB2013 game servers

Which is why I do not like online only titles.

Makes me also realize that my MLB 14 PS4 title will likely run out by Nov. next year.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Expected. Didn't Nintendo end everything on the Wii already, why can't Sony do the same?

Most of the stuff Nintendo ended was years after it came out.

This was just a single year. A game becomes irrelevant just one year later. No way to play with friends online anymore.

It's pretty disappointing, seeing as that Sony can easily host their own servers, and do for many games for many years.

Even Sony has a finite amount of datacenters. Add to that the multitude of their online services and you will see that they are running at full capacity. It's not about the upkeep costs, it's about avoiding to build new datacenters which will amount to costs that are equal or greater than developing a decently sized game.

So they're shutting down lesser used services to provide new services. It's very important to have a high utilization of servers.

I'm not condoning what these game companies do but I want to debunk the myth that building and maintaining datacenters is cheap.

Nintendo had no choice.  They used Gamespy as their online service provider for Wii and DS.  Gamespy shut down a few months ago.  A lot of PS2, PS3, X360, PSP and PC titles were also affected.

Dont forget about those dedicated Dreamcast players most of those games used it

i think the issue is that the game is little over a year old, plus they have closed a games servers down just to try and get people to buy the newer version example gt5

This is not an online only title. There are numerous offline modes that will still be available to play.

I suspect that online play was never a huge part of this game anyway.

I'm not saying that they are cheap. I'm just saying that Sony kept online services for less-played online games like Resistance for years. When a company advertises the online component of games, it's only fair that they keep them up for more than just a year.

I understand that some services will be expensive to maintain, but it serves as a poor precedent when Sony starts closing the online services of games from just a year ago. It makes people less confident about their purchase. Even EA gives around 2 years for their sports titles.

No, Nintendo didn't. Gamespy was bought out by another company, and since Gamespy hosted many of Nintendo's games and since Gamespy was shutting off a lot of services, many of Nintendo's games were shut off as a result.

Nintendo isn't the reason for the old Wii/DS games getting shut down. The GameSpy buyout was. Wii games that use alternate servers still run to this day (GE 007 and 3 COD games come to mind). Anyways, this looks more like a move to get people to buy 14 rather than trimming off dead weight.
