Even Sony has a finite amount of datacenters. Add to that the multitude of their online services and you will see that they are running at full capacity. It's not about the upkeep costs, it's about avoiding to build new datacenters which will amount to costs that are equal or greater than developing a decently sized game. So they're shutting down lesser used services to provide new services. It's very important to have a high utilization of servers. I'm not condoning what these game companies do but I want to debunk the myth that building and maintaining datacenters is cheap. |
I'm not saying that they are cheap. I'm just saying that Sony kept online services for less-played online games like Resistance for years. When a company advertises the online component of games, it's only fair that they keep them up for more than just a year.
I understand that some services will be expensive to maintain, but it serves as a poor precedent when Sony starts closing the online services of games from just a year ago. It makes people less confident about their purchase. Even EA gives around 2 years for their sports titles.
