I know I kinda went off on you for your last editorial, but I love JRPGs so I'm still rooting for ya.
My absolute favorite game is Chrono Trigger. It had an interesting story that took you on a true adventure through the ages. The thing is, 90% of what makes an adventure great is the people you share it with. In the case of Chrono Trigger the characters are just full of personality. The chivalrous Frog, the nerdy Lucca, even the robot Robo was a full-fledged character with his well-meaning intentions.
But Chrono Trigger doesn't just shine because of the characters and stories. A truly great RPG has to pull of everything well. Mechanically, this epic was ahead of its time. While Final Fantasy forced you through countless random encounters requiring screen changes, Chrono Trigger put all the enemies right on the overworld screen and let you duke it out without the screen exploding or shattering or going fuzzy. The fact that characters could complement each other with double and triple attacks was just icing on the cake.
Here's another: Suikoden 5.
This is the game for people who love quirky characters in their JRPGs. As all the other Suikodens, this game had 108 unique characters to recruit. Each one brought something new to the table. To explain all the ways these characters added to the experience would take ages. But the most important way they contribute is in the various types of battles. First off, you had the standard random battle. For these you could have a 6 person party and have 3 auxiliary characters that give you added traits. Then there's the duel mode, which is basically a game of rock, paper, scissors in which you have to figure out what the other guy is gonna do by interpreting what he says. The best battles were the big war battles, though. Sometimes you commanded units on sea, sometimes on land, sometimes on both. And the characters you recruited could be placed in the units and give you certain abilities and attacks. Basically the game was incredibly varied.
Hope this helps, Rocket.
My Top 5:
Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger
My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3
and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
