Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why are people saying the 3DS is selling badly?

Its way down from last year. And the Nintendo shipments prove that its probably not selling as well as what VGC says.

And would a late 2015 release or early 2016 be as fast as Sega did?

Not as fast but it would still be a horrible idea to launch a new console in 2015

because peeps on the internet love to hate things and magnify short comings no matter what.

Their financials say a different story. 3DS hasn't even shipped (SOLD for Nintendo) 1.5m units in the first half of 2014 and WiiU is even worse obviously.

Yes but to make a console successful you first need to build up the install base and then release heavy hitters for it, relasing a  new console before both of those things will result in heavy losses (Just like Sega), I think they need to keep the Wii U until at least 2017 or the end of 2016. Also they 7m or so people who do have a Wii U will get mad at Nintendo for doing that, resulting in even LESS sales in the consoles they launch in 2015

Compare it to Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, DS, PSP and any Iphone / Android device and you will see that it sells very badly. This is also the reason why 3rd party support is almost completely lost.

Gameboy/Gameboy Color units are combined at 118m from 1989-2003, which spans 2 seperate generations or about 60m per gen and GBA/PSP each sold about 80m. So a typical successful handheld sells about 60-80m which 3DS will end up doing, DS is the only one that doesnt fit this trend.

I honestly think the WIi U shouldn't be discontinued till the normal 5 year cycle. No matter if it fails. If Nintendo starts doing this. This will start a problem they won't get out of. That's how 3rd party games nonsense started on Nintendo. Nintendo was arrogant, the system was underpowered, or had some sort of limit. No one really brought real stuff to the systems. Fans got use to not buying anything from those companies. 3rd Parties gave up. Then fans just give up on Nintendo.

If they relase the new system. People will get mad. And just wait on the next system because they don't want to switch. Or even cause a loss of loyal Nintendo fans. Then for what? When the next PS and Xbox come out. The new system is already old and out of date even more.

Not as fast as Sega did in the 90s, they needed to support the Saturn but only after a couple years they launched the Dreamcast which was destroyed by the PS2

The Dreamcast couldn't even get the momentum Sega needed up against the N64 and PS1 (which people tend to forget were still very relevant platforms between 1999-2001), nevermind the PS2.

Besides, Microsoft did this with the original Xbox... and the repercussions were negligible in respect to what the 360 became. Not that Nintendo remotely needs to do that with the 3DS however, if they do it with the Wii U... let's not kid ourselves, no considerable mass-market is going to boycott Nintendo's next home system in light of that.

The DS had sold 30 million more units at this point, and it was up against a strong competitor.

The 3DS is doing okay, and probably earning money, but the future of the handheld market is either radical transformation or extinction.

DS came out a mere 3.5 years after GBA and it went on to sell over 150 million and is the best selling Nintendo product ever.

360 came out 4 years after Xbox and went on to sell over 80 million and nearly quadruple its predeccessor.

Releasing a new device a bit earlier than expected doesnt hurt ur brand, what Sega did was completely different because they released multiple devices a few years apart and barely supported any of them.
