The Dreamcast couldn't even get the momentum Sega needed up against the N64 and PS1 (which people tend to forget were still very relevant platforms between 1999-2001), nevermind the PS2.

Besides, Microsoft did this with the original Xbox... and the repercussions were negligible in respect to what the 360 became. Not that Nintendo remotely needs to do that with the 3DS however, if they do it with the Wii U... let's not kid ourselves, no considerable mass-market is going to boycott Nintendo's next home system in light of that.
