seems like an obvious move.
they have streaming technology in gaikia/psnow. they have a wealth of movie and tv show content. netflix is very successful.
sony would be dumb not to have a video streaming service availible. ..but they better not limit it to just playstation. that shit needs to be on xbox, wiiU, blu ray players, smart TVs, PCs, smartphones, ect.

and why would they want to do that?

Because Sony has a lot of content and scoping it to only their platform will limit Sony ability to sell to a much wider audience. Even MS is learning that in this day and age, if you are a content provider, its best to get your content on as many devices as possible. Wasting a lot of time, money and resources to build a delivery system only to lock it in our eco system could kill or make it very limited and thus not compete with other services. There is to much competition in this space to believe that limiting the service to just Sony console will be a selling feature. It would be a nice add on but it would have a hard time challenging the other services that work on pretty much everything.

quite well put but i like lists so..
A. a video streaming service (even if awesome) will not sell playstations. (or xboxs or wiiUs).
B. a successfull video/music service, imo, needs to be platform agnostic to be successful. locking it up to one kind of device devalues the service a lot. i currently buy a lot of music on amazon. i would not buy that music if i had to use an amazon tablet/phone/ect to access it.
C. more devices = more customers = more profit
i'm a little less sure about it but i think sony should be open to putting psnow on xbox/wiiU as well. i mean,. sony needs to support psvita, ps3, and PC first but after all those boxes are checked i think they should be open to xbox/wiiU. frankly,.. they are more likely to earn a customer on xbox (where a controller is implied) than on a SmartTV where (due to a lack of native controller) there will be significant roadblocks between a potential customer and actual psnow usage.
