Forums - Sales - Is it possible for PS4 to cross 17 million mark by 2014

Possible, but I think unlikely. The Xbox One will be taking a significant amount of the market share with the MCC and Sunset Overdrive, and I'm not sure Sony has the answer to either.

One of the most dilusional posts i've seen, for one, Sunset wont be doing anything for x1 against ps4, that game will flop hard and won't move systems.

Since when do the majority of people buy systems for only exclusives?? Look at the sales charts...multiplats rule the roost and dominate the sales every year, and people prefe PS4 period. Titanfall free, 2 free games didnt help, Sunset sure isn;t. PS4 will be getting thr holiday bump, along with GTA, Far cry , LBP3 bundles.... Only console warriers on forums think exclusives matter much for the average console buyer. Name once the leading console all year in the states got outsold during the holiday?

Since when does PS4 need an answer for x1??? I thing you got it backwards bro, x1 doesn;t have an answer for ps4.

I wouldn't say it's an exaggeration but the last few months tend to be when the systems sell the most during each year. It looks like it needs a total of 5.76 million. Looking at the front page, it says as of October 4th, so that gives it 12 weeks to hit the 17 million mark. That means it'll have to average about 480,000 consoles a week for the next 2 months. I don't see that as being impossible considering that during the holiday season, people are rushing to buy systems and there could easily be a couple of weeks where the system will hit 1 million in sales (if only because of bundles). I think it'll be close and it's more likely to end slightly below 17 million but it's not really a big stretch.

Averaging 480 000 consoles per week is pretty hard on the second year at the last quarter when you start considering that the record holder is the WII with an average of 580 000 units per week. What's more is that the PS4 also struggles to sell 1 million units per month so the PS4's performance as the leading platform is far from ideal in comparsion to both the WII and PS2.

The diff is wii collapsed, ps4 won't...wii was a flash in the pan, and folded...Ps2 will never be matched. Ps4 will outsell wii easy long term as it will have legs. Anyone who brings up the wii without mentioning how fast it folded and how it sold to a market that no longer exists. Sony already has 2 consoles that sold better due to legs.

Where was Sony's answer for Forza Horizon 2? Not a single exclusive release yet they still managed one of the largest September sales in history. It's becoming more and more clear that exclusives aren't selling systems like they used to.

Forza isn't half the IP that Halo is.

Also, I didn't say that the One would outsell the PS4, just that it would move enough units and be competetive enough that the PS4 wouldn't be able to cross 17 million.

Saying that exclusives don't sell systems is misleading. Big IPs like Halo, Uncharted, Last of Us, Pokemon, Zelda, and Gears of War will ALWAYS cause massive spikes in sales.

I don't know, with this gen it seems like exclusive advertising fo the next big multiplat is the best way to go. I wonder how many consumers though Destiny was a PS4 exclusive.

I think it's possible.

PS4 sold 4.2 Million from November 15 to end of December 2013.

It could be around 12 million now, and let's say it sells 800K from now to Nov 15, and another 4.2 Mil after that then it'll be around 17 Million.

That's because we haven't many major IPs from either console makers. The biggest IP was probably Last of Us Remastered, which netted the PS4 tons of sales when it came out. I don't see why the MCC (which is arguably much bigger in terms of IP popularity and content) couldn't have similar effects for the Xbox One throughout the holiday season.

Not to mention, Microsoft has been exclusively marketing the hell out of Madden, Assassin's Creed, and Call of Duty as well, so by that logic Microsoft should do relatively well this holiday season.

The PS4 has attracted a lot of former Xbox 360  owners that never played Last of Us.  Recent Nielsen data showed that nearly a third of PS4 owners jumped ship from 360 or Wii, in other words well over 3 Million people.  That's a good market contributing to the ~1.5 Million sales of TLOU Remastered.

I'm not sure there was a similar study about XB1 owners, but I don't expect that many PS3 owners jumped ship to XB1.  MCC is going to be selling mostly to people who played those Halos before and want to double dip.  It will increase sales, but those are the folks that are firmly in the Xbox camp anyway.
