Maybe it's because you weren't around during the genesis era. That's when Sonic was (culturally) at his peak.
Mega Drive/Genesis: Not really overrated.
Saturn: Nonexistent.
Dreamcast: Overrated (very much).
Post Dreamcast: Mostly accepted as shitty.

Although fun, I thought the very concept of the original 3 is flawed. Of course everyone perceives things differently but to me personally, 2D Sonic games seem to be designed to be played at highspeeds and as a result, they mostly feel boring and unrewarding when played at lower speeds. Playing them at highspeeds can be fun, but when you think about, it all comes down to the press and timing of one button! The system relies too much on memorizing and too little on analysis and actual reaction. To each his own but highspeed gameplay on a side-scroller will never work for me. I did like Sonic Adventure a lot though, that game gives you time and has some proper platforming elements to it. I doubt it aged well but I definitely enjoyed it at the time. |
That might be the case with the original Sonic and maybe Sonic 2, but Sonic 3 & Knuckles actually rewards exploration by giving you power-ups, rings and giant rings which lead to special stages! At least that's how I feel about this!

The early supposedly good Sonic games and the Sonic Adventure games my not be the most overrated games ever, but they're definitely some of the most overrated games. The whole series is rather sub par, imo. Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2 are just as bad as Sonic '06. Rose tinted glass may have blinded them, thinking the games are better than they are. When it's all you can play, you kind of just deal with it, and that's probably why there's so many fans.
when i was a little child i loved sonic. but i cant play this game again today...

Yeah.... I don't agree with this! At least SA1 and SA2 are playable games and their stories don't involve damn beastiality!

I have never fallen for the Sonic hype. The only Sonic game I like is Sonic Battle and Sonic Heroes. Every other one just looks meh.
