Okay, so I just watched episodes 1-5 of Aldnoah.Zero. So far I have to say that I'm fairly bored watching it. It started with a clumsy infodump of technobabble (or techno-fantasy-political-babble), and moved into a rather generic mech show with the super smart prodigy beating the bad guy (and some simple subterfuge (ep 5 spoiler: Is the emperor really so stupid that he would just believe that guy? He was just told by someone that there were factions in their midst, performing some unpleasant deeds and he just believes the other guy with no question. He seemed to be smarter than that...I mean, its obvious by how horrible the knights are that they hunger for war...)). I will say that the MC is kinda interesting in how placid he is, but the fact that he can figure all this stuff out and the trained military can't do shit is baffling.

Anyone got any counter opinions?

HUGE SPOILERS FROM EP 1-5

I'm not really going to defend it, since the anime community itself is divided, with some really liking it and some finding it boring.

I will say this, though. The reason the MC is so good is because he is calm and calculating. Everyone else was either overconfident (the first few episodes) or scared shitless (the last few). You have to remember that almost no one has combat experience, and the few that do are horribly traumatized. There's also no way to communicate with leadership or other squads, so there's no way to give intel or find out weak points and such. Esentially every squad is on their own. The MC just happens to be insanely smart, with a very calculative personality. It allows him not to get caught up in things and fight the Martians with a level head.

And the emperor just lost his grandaughter, and has no way of confirming anything, since he is too frail to investigate himself. Will he believe a trusted Martian noble, or will he trust a Earthling, who is believed by the Martians to be a completely inferior race?

All I'll say is that the anime is 24 episodes long, not even a fourth of the way done. I would say give it more time, but then again a lot of people simply are uninterested with another mecha anime, so it's understandable if you don't like it.

In the dusty basement where we met
May you surprised me so much
Because you’re talking now
I gotta find the truth from many fights
But I’m all alone
You’re the only one who can help me out
We’ll be as one

We’re ready to fight
Look over there
They try to kill us for stars
Our bond has got much stronger than before

Don’t lose your way in your mind
We have to be as one
Don’t be afraid my sweetheart
This is the way to be more strong
Harbour my deep secret
It makes me so blue
Run through this game before my body is dry

Yeah, while no one has combat experience, its not like they would logically be sitting on their butts the whole time. They were under constant threat by a people that are much stronger then them (who for some reason didn't just take the earth despite wanting it?). All logic would imply that they would be highly militant and highly trained, constantly undergoing rigorous simulations and training, instead of being the helpless morons that all the soldiers acted like. I cannot believe that one random guy would be able to pretty easily take the baddies down where the rest of the worlds combined might was rendered nearly helpless...

The emperor played the part of "wise man" for a while 5 minutes before devolving into a tool. Sure he just lost his granddaughter, but he should be smarter than just jumping back into war without finishing his investigation of earth, or trying to validate the earthling's claim. There really isn't any rush, so why be hasty?

The logic just seems like an afterthought or a means to an end...

I get that it is early in the show, but it has yet to show me that it really has anything going for it, except the decentMC...I'll keep watching (although I will always be a week behind because I don't have a premium account on Crunchyroll), but I'm glad that I'm watching it one week at a time because I don't think I could marathon this series...

Actually, most people on Earth were completely unaware that they were so far behind. They were led to believe by the governments that they were on equal footing with the Martians, so a lot of them were lax in training and such.

And the grandfather was presented evidence from a trusted source that the Earthlings were scheming about his granddaughter's death. Imagine someone telling you that a loved one you believe dead is alive, but then being presented evidence that the person that brought you the news might be a traitorous spy.

But yeah, still many episodes left, and like many mainstream anime, there will be a large portion of people that don't get the hype, and I don't blame you for it.

I finished Attack on Titan (Season 1), Fullmetal Alchemist, FMA:B and Code Geass this summer. All were amazing.

While that may be true (I think everyone knew about the threat, just not how OP the martians were), it still makes no sense. The world (keep in mind that every single government who knew what was up would have to keep quiet, which is likely all of the major powers, if not from the initial battle, then whoever was in the know would share that information to help protect the planet) has no reason to lie to make the people feel safe and its obvious that they were in training. Even the current militaries of the world would stand a better chance against the martians. Earth wouldn't be that light on defences. Additionally, all of earth working together for 15 years would likely leave them with better tech then their crappy mechs...

Also, I still think that they destroyed the character of the Emperor by making him so stupid. I mean, wouldn't you think he would at least finish his investigation of earth before starting the war back up again? If there was an inkling of hope that his granddaughter was alive, wouldn't he try to grab on to it, despite some evidence that it may be a lie? Stupidity of the characters isn't really an excuse for bad writing...

I'll keep posting my thoughts every week, and I'm up for more discussion, but things aren't looking good...

The 1 I would personally like to point out is this one

Mad respect for her being able to walk around in that all day. You do that here in Aus and you would be stalked by like half the guys at the expo all day. The other half are either gay, with a GF or to shy/nervous to even look at her =P

Now this is just wonderful
