Forums - Gaming - The difference between the failure of the XB1 and the Wii U.

Pretty much what I was going to say.  Design innovation is ultimately dependent on technological innovation.  That cannot be argued.  Mario Galaxy would not have been close to the same game on the SNES.  The FPS genre would never have taken off the same way if they all remained in tunnels.  Da Vinci's work would not have been the same if he was limited to drawing on paper with charcoal.  More "power", to use a very general word for a lot of different elements, gives artists more paints, more brushes, and a much bigger canvas.

I was just reading about what the did with KZ on PS4 and all the new stuff they pushed, even for a launch title:

- The sound of all guns isn't simply a pre-recorded file being reproduced. They use a map of every object in the enviroment and their type of materials to simulate the sound waves reverbering so shooting a gun in an open enviroment or in a closed corridor is different. Even on a corridor, the sould will vary if it's close to a wall of if the wall is made of metal or wood.

- The animations are procedurally generated, so every Helghast moves differently according to where he is and who he is.

Developers want more power so they can push the bondaries.

My idea of innovation isn't continuing down the same path. That's just an improvement. I guess it comes down to semantics though.

To me an innovation would be the Wii controller, the spherical platforms in SMG, or the dual analog controller. Changes that bring about completely new ideas.

Oh I'm sure the PS4 will be doing 2:1 when it comes to those releases but i still expect a healthy boost for the Xbox. Also  Halo + Gears >>> Any IP sony has. Specifically because they online/community and the power in them. I really think people are making the mistake in thinking that these early adopters are representive of the masses that will swarm to the next gen systems once they've got big hitters exclusive. I don't think the casual COD fan has the bias against microsoft that is portrayed by the informed gamers on here who bring up suff like resolution, DRM etc.

Didn't the last Gears game fall off a cliff as far as sales go? Uncharted and Gran turismo are pretty big franchises, arguably bigger than Halo and Gears. Bonus, Sony has more, and more varied, first party franchises. Gears and Halo appeal to the same type of crowd, which isn't a terribly great thing.

CoD casuals may not understand things like resolution, DRM, and frame rates, but they do understand "The PS4 has better graphics and costs the same. It even gets some cool exclusive content for Destiny broseph."

Everyone keeps saying that they expect the XB1's multiplats to be a selling point. Here's a little mental, or real world if you want, experiment you can try:

Make two batches of doughnuts. Make sure Batch B looks a tiny bit deformed or smaller. Set up a sidewalk stand and try to sell them. Batch A looks better and you can drizzle a very small amount of chocolate, caramel, or sprinkles on it. Batch B is slightly less appealing and doesn't get the toppings. Sell both batches at the exact same price, and refuse to add any toppings to doughnuts from Batch B no matter what. See how many Batch B doughnuts sell before Batch A runs out.

I think you're falling into the trap of trying to push the point that the PS4 will sell better then the Xbox One, which is not the point of the original discussion. Look back at what you're saying. Xbox is currently selling at 55k a week and you don't think will recieve a huge boost from next gen exclusives? If so explain to me why the system is selling near parity to Wii U with no system sellers? Surely that is the effect of 3rd parties? And thats merely cross gen titles (titanfall, watchdogs, cod)

Furthermore
Gears and Halo have huge followings and that can't be ignored. The deciding factor between the systems for a fair amount of people won't be which one runs 3rd party games slightly better but which ones has all the games they want to play. My point is there is definitely a big enough following for xbox exclusive games that when they do finally arrive(the big ones), they will create traction. Even if you're just buying a next gen system for 3rd party software, if theres a new halo game coming out soon and you're a casual fan of the franchise that will likely sway you... And although the PS4 has plenty of exclusives coming, they are ultimately very different from Microsofts.

But I'll agree to disagree, we will see whether Xbox's sales are strongly boosted (not above PS4) when AC Unity, Witcher 3, Batman etc come out...

Xbox One: Best selling Xbox console so far.
Wii-U: Worst selling Nintendo console so far.

What was that about failure again?

That's not helping considering the best selling xbox console is still behind the Nintendo's worst selling one.

But you can't really say that's failing if one is longer on the market and has hade more game releases. Failure is always something relative. So here is a graph to put things in perspective for you:

So the wii u sold 0 consoles this year?

We were discussing the definition of failure, and the graph shows that the Wii-U is the only system down compared to last generation thus far.

If you have the numbers for Xbox One or PS4 until July 2015 be free to share them, but since that would require looking in to the future this is all we have to compare with so far.

The failings are the same for both consoles - too little power leading to a cap on innovation in games. Most of the market sees this, hence the low sales on both.

This was utterly silly. One does not even ahhhh forget it.

Innovation is silly? Umkay....

The Wii was one of the most innovative systems ever created and it was just a turbocharged gamecube.

This is a horrible blog wannabe-site that posts shit and then come to VGChartz for views. 'Nuff said.

3DS, Wii, PSP, Vita, PS2, PS3, PS4 & Steam.

While it's true that I do post links to my "horrible blog wannabe-site," I've been posting here since before I even started writing. My blog site isn't even adsensed, it's not like I'm generating money off of it now. It's just an easier way for me to start conversations across several areas at once.

Also, someone recognized my writing that got promoted on gamesbeat and offered me a job writing game reviews starting next month, so at least some people like what I write.

Well, if that's true, I don't see why people would call Wii U a failure.

Honestly its the bandwagon cool thing to do. So people will do it lol

Is the wiiU a failure? No. It's not. But I wouldn't say that it's doing well. Since the ps4 has been out, the wiiU hasn't beaten it's weekly sales once. It didn't even do it the week of its biggest exclusive of all time. Here's the wiiU's huge problem though that makes me confident that it won't be a success. People compare the wiiU and the ps3 sometimes because the ps3 started out with pretty bad sales, but they picked up about a year and a half after launch. If you look at the sales, ps3's first year was far better than it's first, and so on. The wiiU's second year is trending worse. So the idea that the sales will pick up at some point doesn't come from a realistic look at the numbers. It comes solely from misplaced optimism.

As long as u dont have a real insight company views with profit margins / numbers and so on u cant say if its a failure or not.

a. sell 1000 consolde with 200 dollar profit each one
OR
b. sell 5000 consoles with 20 dollar profit each one.

What console is the failure?
