The numbers you quoted are suspect in any case.  And MS was patent trolling Android before 2011 anyway...it's just that it came to the media's attention by 2011.  Here's the deal...I DON'T REALLY CARE!  You and I can argue about it until we are both blue in the face, but the FACT is that the people who DO know how badly they are failing see the TRUE numbers, and they AREN'T PRETTY!

If Xbox were successful, you wouldn't hear REPEATED calls from investors to spin off the division!  If they were profitable, NO ONE would have any doubt that they would keep making the console!  But they aren't and they havent been...so the speculation on when MS will pull the plug will continue.

You can delude yourself all you want with the PR spin that MS releases, but the TRUTH is that Xbox is a MINOR part of what MS does, and it's a minor part that LOSES MONEY!  Businesses exist to MAKE money, not lose it.  Once Xbox was part of a "grand scheme" to take over the living room...but the "living room" isn't as important a battleground these days...smartphones and tablets are where the "war" is being fought, and Xbox is nothing but a distraction from what Microsoft's core business is.  Will "Xbox" die?  No.  I am sure you will see "Xbox Music", "Xbox Video" and "XBox Games"....on Lumia handsets.  For the Bone?  It's done.  Just watch.

Do you have a link about MS getting patent royalties prior to 2011? Even if that is true, the quarterly results from FY2008 were posted on July 2008 while Android never came out until September 2008. How do you explain that? Furthermore, Andorid in its infancy couldn't have given as much $$$ as it did in 2011 as it needed time to beas successful as it was. But regardless the links proved that Xbox itself was successful before Android released so I am very confused as to what your reasoning is.

Quarterly results don't lie, and again, Xbox profits were before Android released. Xbox is a minor part in what MS does, and that may be why investors ask for it to be sold, but doesn't mean its posting a loss for years when that is simply not true.

I still don't understand where you are coming from. Do you want Xbox to be gone out of personal bias? Because the links I provided are there for you to see.Again, to summarize, quarterly statements can't lie as that is illegal. Xbox has been profitable since before Android released. Please help me understand where you are coming from, preferably with official statements and numbers.

Again, you must have missed it, but I DONT CARE what the financials say...they ROUTINELY twist those numbers to say whatever the hell they want them to say.  But the TRUTH is known by those who spin those numbers, and those who they answer to.

So, enjoy whatever articles and links you want to...but the end result will be the same.  Just wait until after Xmas this year...you will see what I mean.

Seriously I would not be wasting time on this argument. His claims based on the same 4 or so only links in the world (based on the same rumour source) have been refuted here before). The premise of his arguments are one of desire to see Microsoft fail than to to apply logic. In the latest quarter MS E&D saw growth in revenue on the back of less Xone sales but a higher priced console and continuing xbox live revenue which is always healthy because of the payment model of the subscription method which now Sony are trying to copy.

And my last point I should make, if MS, did want to spin off the Xbox business, no one would want to buy it. Who in their right corporate mind would want to buy the last iteration of a console business before it becomes cloud based which is where MS is going anyhow. For this Nadella is prepared to ride out and support the xbox brand and has in fact said so in an interview I read on CNET.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One

The "Didn't read posts" are kind of disrespectful.

Anyway, the article does raise some valid points, although I still believe Microsoft as a company is not going to sit idle and let their products go into obscurity. It has the money to prevent that.

Also, Nokia was a very wise investment. I'm quite sure it only goes up from here.

Geez people, if you're not going to read it, don't comment. One or two comments about spacing were all that was necessary to get the point across.

This has some good points. I've always seen Microsoft as software before hardware and productivity before games, and based on the recent memo, I'd say the CEO agrees that productivity software and making Windows the best it can be comes first. Xbox will never be sold, not because it isn't valuable, but because it's so valuable that spin-off could be pretty successful. It seems unlikely to me that they'd spin it off, but not impossible. The idea that Nadella might try to focus the company by dropping devices does seem rather plausible, and such a scenario is the only way I could see a spin-off happening. It might even be a good thing. Right now Xbox is suffering from a public perception problem. Distancing itself a bit from Microsoft might be just what it needs to build a fresh perception in the eyes of the public. Also, being independent from Microsoft would give Xbox a lot more freedom. Less involvement from levels upon levels of men in suits that don't understand gaming, less red tape against doing cool stuff, more focusing on innovation and a coherent vision. Microsoft is in no danger, and could probably push through with devices with the brute force of their money alone, but if they choose to change their focus, they'd do just fine, and Xbox would continue as it was, possibly better. No need to worry.

As a fan of Xbox, I'd be sad if MS sold it. But if I were the CEO, I'd get rid of Xbox as fast as I can. The prospects aren't good and it barely makes money. I'd also get rid of the Surface tablets. I'd keep the Lumia phones though cause it still has lots of potential to do well.

Doesn't this fly in the face of M$'s reported 1.1mil Xbox growth YoY? Or am I totally misreading something.

You think 1.1 million Xbox Ones and 360s is good?

I mean they reportedly shipped 1.1mil more Xboxes this year over last year.

The numbers are truth. MS is lucky whenever they make one red cent on Xbox. You may consider the brand too big to fail, but several other major gaming brands have been where Xbox is now only fall flat on their face a few years later.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

MS routinely twist their numbers so you don't trust their financial reports, which are double / triple checked by the IRS and the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Yet, you trust a rumor made from one guy?!

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

No they shipped 1 million 360s alone last year. Now they've only shipped 1.1 million 360s+X1s

Not reading beyond title.

MS will be fine, and as long as they get money elseware they will PUSH the Xbox brand even if it is getting worse.

Yeah throwing money in a pit of fire is a great business practice.  I swear some people here don't understand that the point of a company is to make money, not find interesting ways to waste it.

So no Xbox? I am quite fond of that solution!

Not necessarily lol. Some other company could buy the brand and perhaps make a profitable go of it. Samsung perhaps lol? I always wanted to see a Korean home game console.
