That's usually how it is. Coexistence between supposedly intractable communities happens all the time, usually because they're all being ruled by a higher power (in Israel's case, the Ottoman Turks who were not particularly fussed about the Palestinian province). It's only when one side begins to try to assert itself over the other sides that things go to shit (see also: Yugoslavia).

Aside from a few nuts like that Ayelet Shaked woman, most people want the violence to stop, they just see it from two perspectives. There's the "once Hamas is dead, this will stop," side, and the "stop killing civilians NOW" side. The key is that both sides, in wanting basically the same thing, have been set against each other due to Hamas' strategy of violating protocol 1 of the Geneva Convention: using civilian populations as shields for their activities.

Now, of course, they have some reason to do so, due to the overwhelming military superiority of their enemy, if they played "fair," they'd get their asses whopped in a second, and not having a futile death wish, they rather don't want that. But Hamas' tactics is what makes this so much more brutal than the comparable insurgency up in Ukraine, where civilian deaths have been far less of an issue.
