Forums - Microsoft - If Microsoft had a built-in HD-DVD...

@Stockstar: Remember, though, HD-DVD likely would have had more support if it was built-in to each Xbox.

However, I agree, it would've been catastrophic for MS. Their biggest saving grace right now (to some) is that they're cheaper.

Also, I believe a lot more people would get (or at least want) Wiis, seeing as how it would be $250 running against $500-$600 competitors.

i really don't think you can say that.  it would have launched only a few months before ps3 and probably with even worse sales than the 360 had to begin with.  sony definately would not have supported it, disney and fox sided with blu-ray for region protection, and xbox having hd dvd in their console wouldn't have changed that.  Lionsgate is doubtful to have moved either as it is run by a bunch of people who used to work at Sony.  These studios would have seen poor 360 sales and no security and said, well stick with blu-ray exclusivity.  Devs would have seen poor 360 sales and said, we aren't putting our PS3 exclusive titles on 360 and sales would have been even worse.

I think the 360 would have been a total disaster with HD DVD built in.

Toshiba might have stuck around a little longer with HD DVD, but when it did drop it, man the 360 would look like a huge failure.

So what exactly are we disagreeing on?  I only meant that HD-DVD would likely still have big places like Warner Bros. and Universal backing it.  It would likely still lose to BR, but it would've been a far more epic battle.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I find these "What if" threads to be quite pointless, simply we do not know what would have happened, and does it really matter what we think now that its done and over with?

It's just fun to conjecture

there were alot more HD tv's out when Blu-Ray lanched. than when HD-DVD launched. so it would have been real bad for the 360 with a higher price tag.

If it had built in HD DVD, then it would have launched at near $600, people would have been used to that price point, when the PS3 came out, it wouldn't have got all that negative press for price......and since sales wouldn't seem so low in comparison to the 360, maybe some games would have stayed exclusive.....

The "format war" would still be going on, and there would still be a chance of the average consumer picking the "wrong" format.

Hmmmm......were they smart for leaving it out? Or stupid? If they had it in, the could have got more sales, as it would double as a next gen dvd player when and if a format would have been chosen as the standard. But if they kept it in, their crusade to penetrate Sony's market wouldn't have been very successful because it would have been similarly priced.....

They don't have it in, and now the PS3 is outselling it, partially because Blu-ray has become popular. But they kept it out, and now the 360 is doing eleventy billion times better than the original Xbox.

TOO MANY FACTORS!!! IT'S AN ENDLESS CIRCLE!!!!!!

It would have cost at least $500 at launch. The 360 would be at 12 million now. MS would have lost a lot more money due to Sony-style money eating ADDED to RRoD.

HD DVD would have gotten a huge boost and we would probably be seeing a fierce war right now between HD DVD and Blu-ray. I think Blu-ray would still win because it is a superior format and had more studio support, but it would not be far ahead yet.

I think MS made the right choice; HD DVD was even less ready in 2005 than Blu-ray was in 2006. MS abandoned HD DVD to its fate for the sake of its console.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.
