It would have cost at least $500 at launch. The 360 would be at 12 million now. MS would have lost a lot more money due to Sony-style money eating ADDED to RRoD.
HD DVD would have gotten a huge boost and we would probably be seeing a fierce war right now between HD DVD and Blu-ray. I think Blu-ray would still win because it is a superior format and had more studio support, but it would not be far ahead yet.
I think MS made the right choice; HD DVD was even less ready in 2005 than Blu-ray was in 2006. MS abandoned HD DVD to its fate for the sake of its console.
