Forums - Gaming - I do miss backward compatibility

Although I do understand it, it's almost impossible to emulate PS3 or Xbox 360 games and putting PS3/360 hardware in the PS4/One would cost too much and waste too much power... I wish they'd give us like a power converter that the Genesis used. There would be an add-on module with an embedded Cell/RSX graphics chip that would connect to the back of the PS4 via an external PCI bus adapter so it can have access to the PS4's I/O and AV-Out subsystems.

The x86 architecture is fast enough to handle the subsystems necessary to emulate the PS3 properly, due to having 512MB of the memory it needs. Then sell this for like $70 or something.

However instead this generation we are just going to get trounced with 1 year "enhanced ports," uber-expensive subscriptions to play old games, etc. etc. I can honestly see this generaiton of consoles being the last.

This is one of the reasons I am going with Wii-U this gen.

Sony spoiled us.

Yeah tell me about it. I even have ps1/2 games I like to play from time to time. Thankfully, ps3 can play ps1 games and emulator takes care of the ps2 side but I have to keep logging a ps3/4 around. When I originally got my ps3 (got the 60gb), I was able to toss my ps2 away even if ps3 had no games. I didn't even notice when all the complaining was going on because of the good ps2 games available.

Fast forward to this gen and I turn my ps4 on maybe once a month.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Yeah. I mean I understand why the PS4 and Xbox One aren't backwards compatible - it makes sense. The One and PS4 have different architecture that isn't powerful enough to emulate the previous generation systems. And of course, putting the actual chip in would cost too much and cause heating problems.

That's why I wish they'd give us an option at least to buy a power base converter and hook it up and use that instead though.

Same. I would love for them to figure out a way to connect a box to them that will make them BC. The only thing is, is that even phisically possible? I mean could they even do something like tht through the USB port?

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

It wasn't a big deal to me until a few weeks ago when my PS3 died on me (80GB, MGSIV bundle, PS2 BC, I loved that huge fat noise machine). I never even got to play my freshly bought copy of The Last of Us (original!). If the PS4 had been BC it would have been the perfect opportunity to buy a PS4 but now I'm looking for a new PS3 instead.

Buy a Wii U

Wii U doesn't have any games I want to play besides Bayonetta 2.

Maybe you will like the games after you play them.

If there was a way to play before you pay, this would make sense. I've learned the hard way to not do what you're suggesting.

That's why demos and friends exist.

Good guy Wii U
