i have it on ps3 and i didnt get passed like two hours after the intro. i dont know what it is. i tried to like the game but couldnt. is it really that good?

i know everybody has their own taste in video games. i dont like games that kind of play themselves. i dont like playing through a game just to get to a cutscene so i can see more story. tell me, is what makes this game so great just the story? i do want to see the story, but i dont know if i can get through the boring gameplay to see it. would i be better off just looking it up on youtube? i might give it a try again this summer because of all this buzz, but i really dont know if i could get through it.

I'm speaking with all the truth: It's the best game I've played last gen.
It starts good with the infestation, then if start again really slow and I was uneasy while playing it for some time, but when Ellie appears... the game start to develops emotionally and start to grow in you bonds with the characters, it's really an amazing experience. By the end of the game I was in fact caring for the characters, like they were real, I was feeling like I was inside that experience.
But it's the story that make it great indeed, not watching it, developing it is what it's great.
The game have plenty of exploration and survival, some puzzles (really really easy) and progression into it. It's not a watch the story experience like Final Fantasy 13 (that had an amazing story too), but the gameplay don't change much from the moment you get to Ellie, so if you are not enjoying it after some hours after that you probably won't enjoy it anyway.
I don't recommend you to watch it on youtube, it won't give you a glimpse of the experience, and if tou turn to like it you will be already spoiled.
I highly recommend the game, but the focus is the story, the development of the bond between the characters and they survival. You choose if it fits you or don't.

yeah.. i will more than likely just try to power my way through it at some point.. i probably just have to force myself to play it for like ten hours until i get over that hump. i find that with some games, you have to get over that hump and you really start enjoying it. i didnt give it enough of a chance.

I remember it kicking of with an emotional bang at the beggining but after that it was slow for a bit.  However once it begins to pick up, it becomes a truely fantastic single player expererience.

Put the controller down and be amazed...that nothing will happen, the game does not move forward without the player so I don't know where you got that ridiculous observation. I will refrain from responding further to, what I can only assume is a passive aggressive jab at the game, based on your experience on a very short time with the game (which is fairly long for its genre, my first run took me 20 hours to beat, 85% completion, no guides) and agree to disagree.

OT: The trailer have not impressed me. I plan to get it, even though I have beaten the game 3 times (currently working on grounded mode) just not on day 1. Amazing soundtrack however, it literally gave me chills from time to time.

what i mean by that comment is that the game seems REALLY linear and people like it because of the story and the character development. i have just always been of the mind that if a game is relying on good story and character development.. then it might as well have just been a movie. i dont see the advantage of it being a game at that point. this is of course just a matter of preference, and im not really sure because i havent played it, but the last of us seems to fit that category and thats why i havent gotten around to playing it yet.

Definitely try it again. It starts off great and then it slows down quite a bit when you fast forward to the future. I'd say it takes a little over 2 hours for it to pick back up again. Probably around the 3 hour point is where the character development starts shining.

ok thank you, thats kind of waht i wanted to know.

for instance, i am a huge zelda fan, but if anybody wants to play twilight princess, i would tell them.. the first five hours are going to be mighty boring. and i love the game. but i will always tell them that its not exciting and youre really going to have to just force yourself to get through the first 4-5 hours if you find yourself getting bored.

I really enjoyed the gameplay. It was brutal and challenging. I only played it on the two hardest difficulties., so maybe the AI just isn't difficult on the lower modes. I've heard some people say that the AI is dumb, but I experienced none of that with on those difficulties.

It is heavily focused on story but that doesn't necessarily take from the gameplay. The game is extremely immersive and the mechanics are quite simply the best I've experienced in a third person shooter. Shooting recoil may start off a bit annoying to less patient players, but it will become close to perfect as you progress and upgrade your guns.

On the downside though, It has a little bit of "Assassin's Creed" in terms of variety. While it isn't anywhere as repetitive, I felt like it could have been more diverse despite the limitations of plot and setting. The enemy/friendly AI can sometimes be hilarious too, but overall it's pretty impressive.

Yay another The Last of Us thread!

Do you like playing a game just to get to the end of the stage and see the "level complete" screen with the score?

Those story cutscenes basically replace those screens.

As for not loving the gameplay... To each their own. For me, I've always enjoyed games with stealth and the kind of atmosphere that The Last of Us has. You have to play with the volume cranked up a little though for the atmosphere to be at its best.

It's decent for what it is, much better than the uncharted games. It's certainly not one of the greatest games ever made or any of that nonsense.
