Forums - Gaming - The Console that got me into JRPGS...

PS1; the home of JRPGs. This was continued with the PS2.
360 got some gems at the beginning of last gen, PS3 got some beauties at the end of last gen.

Still, nothing compares to PS1/PS2 days (except some SNES = Chrono Trigger, FF6, etc). However I played FF1-6, Chrono Trigger on PS1

Pretty sure it was the PS2 with Star Ocen: Til the end of time. I logged in some 100+ hours on that game.

The NES got me into JRPG's with the first Dragon Warrior/Quest game I played it all the way through and beat it at least four times.

The first time I saw that blue slime I was hooked, this is a game that as a kid made me start writing down all the things from my real life that i was gaining EXP in along with catalogging "items" and assigning gold coin values.

run away!

PS1 for me. But this was also before I knew "JRPGs" was a thing. If it wasn't a "fighting game" (Tekken, Street Fighter, etc) or a "sports game", then it was labeled as only a "video game" to me. Didn't give a separate label to distinguish Crash Bandicoot from MGS1 from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

But it was an amazing experience. FFIX was the first and I had no clue why I was so attached to the game, didn't want it to end, was emotionally attached to certain characters, etc. It was just a "video game" to me. Hindsight, then, told me that it was because I wasn't just playing a game. I was involved in a story. A good JRPG is like playing out a good book. That's what got me to play Legend of Dragoon. Then FFX and Dark Cloud on PS2. I, admittedly, was only initially interested in Kingdom Hearts because the gameplay looked cool and the mash up was interesting, but the result ended up the same: got attached the characters, didn't want it to end, etc.

To be fair I actually haven't played that many JRPGs despite really liking the genre (mostly because I was too young to know what one was when we had a PS1 and then my Dad bought an Xbox and then a 360), but I can't deny it was Pokemon on GBA, followed up by more of the same on DS, plus Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Dragon Quest Monsters and FFXII: Revenant Wings (if that last one counts).

I ended up taking a break for a long time after that but bought a PS3 at the beginning of this year and played through Ni no Kuni which I loved despite some flaws, hoping to brush up some more of the back catalogue soon (not planning on buying a PS4 for a while, plus I still haven't played Persona 4 or Ys on my Vita yet)

360 got you into jrpgs?? Man I'm old...

Hahaha I was thinking the same thing but for me the PS1 was the console that really got me into JRPGs. I was mostly a PC gamer before.

The only JRPG's I ever gave a damn about on the Xbox were Lost Odyssey. You seriously missed out on the good ol days of JRPG's on Nintendo and the Playstation. I would say those consoles simultaneously got me into JRPG's.
