PS1 for me. But this was also before I knew "JRPGs" was a thing. If it wasn't a "fighting game" (Tekken, Street Fighter, etc) or a "sports game", then it was labeled as only a "video game" to me. Didn't give a separate label to distinguish Crash Bandicoot from MGS1 from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.
But it was an amazing experience. FFIX was the first and I had no clue why I was so attached to the game, didn't want it to end, was emotionally attached to certain characters, etc. It was just a "video game" to me. Hindsight, then, told me that it was because I wasn't just playing a game. I was involved in a story. A good JRPG is like playing out a good book. That's what got me to play Legend of Dragoon. Then FFX and Dark Cloud on PS2. I, admittedly, was only initially interested in Kingdom Hearts because the gameplay looked cool and the mash up was interesting, but the result ended up the same: got attached the characters, didn't want it to end, etc.
