Forums - Gaming - Insider (a real one) talking about VR future: "I think VR is bad news."

I suggest everybody read the full letter at the link provided, it is very smartly written and insightful.

I personally don't have any stronger opinion on VR except the one that I'm 100% certain I will never buy it or use it. It doesn't interest me a single bit, and I agree with the viewpoint that it creates detachment from people rather than joining people together in some VR world.
I don't mind if it becomes a fad, trend, or real future of gaming and social interactions in general, I will always choose talking to someone in person, and experiencing events in person rather than VR. Sure, my experiences will be limited by my financial resources, but it is better to have one great real personal experience, than a hundred fake virtual ones.

Do you think that people who aren't very social in the first place will suddenly be social if there is no VR?

It's not tech that leads to antisocial behavior. It's people.

As I wrote there, I have no opinion on VR other than my own life-style. I don't care what other people do, as I wrote there, I prefer to have personal experiences.

It is not about being social per se. It is the fact that I would rather pay $5000 to go to Tahiti than pay $20 for a VR Tahiti simulation. That's why I know my realities, and I will never get to travel around the globe, but VR simulation will not satisfy my need anyway.

I try not to judge other people's choices. I can just make my own, and learn to live with the choices others make. In this matter, my choice has been made.

so because its "anti social". i dont really give a shit, a lot of people play video games by them selfs, this is no big deal at all.

That's your opinion, fine. Not giving a shit about all the text is something I can't agree with, though. He really makes some good points but well, he also doesn't like online gaming which many people also can't understand.

If it is a big deal I think no one can tell by now. Not you, not Fabian. But I think as he experienced a lot of implementations (and even did a lot himself for companies) and tried different hardware I tend to somehow take his words more seriously than comments that "don't give a shit".

again i dont give a shit. he has had experience with it and formed his opinion, i am waiting to have mine. i wont let one guy who has formed his opinion (even if its very well constructed and has a lot of good points) to make me not want to form mine. specially when their are legions of devs out there who are incredibaly excited for this medium.

he is predicting how the medium will evolve, and thats why he wants out. i for one, will wait and see how it actually fleshes out before commiting to it, and i certainly wont close the door on it because what one man has to say, hence, the i dont give a shit.

Then instead of paying videogames, go out there and do game things in real life

Lol. So what he is saying that everyone who uses VR to have some fun alone time is a loser.

And he spreads his shitty opinion under the veil of professionalism even though his opinion has nothing to do with the tech he was involved with.

I don't think you read the letter completely. And how can an opinion be shitty? This puts you more to blame than his letter.

I misunderstood then. It's really just about your opinion. The problem was that it was written in a tone as to devalue other people's life choices or preferences.

Thanks for clarifying, no hard feelings.

I guess I just had a problem with your wording. Giving a two-sentence answer containing "shit" while rygorous provided a well-written, insightful post on github containing years of experience with the tech is something which is, to me, inappropriate and not really thought through.

Of course he won't stop the tech nor will this prevent the tech to go where it will go, though.

I read was what posted here and now I've read the whole thing. My opinion still doesn't change. The problem here is that he is not only representing his own opinion but at the same time devaluing everyone else's opinion by saying "VR is bad news". Not just for him but suposedly for everyone. That's what makes his opinion a shitty one.

His fear of an antisocial future has nothing to do with his job as it was purely technological in nature. Yet he uses his profession as some kind of tool to proof validity of his opinion. His sting at corporations and ads may be valid for some but it's just there to strike a chord with today's paranoid society.

So yes, I don't like him or what he is spreading through the internet.

Wait, so if i use VR i will be unable to talk to people in person ever again?

That is clearly a danger! I will avoid this contraption from hell!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

After reading the article I just don't seem to get how you can build such an opinion from him and some parts of your opinion just seem off but that's what discussion is for, thankfully. Perhaps Daniel Collin was right (and not limited to gamespot)...

I actually had a long answer written out, but then I realized that you obviously cannot comprehend what I've written so far and will fail to do so again, so why waste an effort on responding to you.
