Forums - Sony - Video:Excuses Why PS4 Is Selling Is Irrelevant

mornelithe said:

Wrong, I just rewatched:

"They believe there is no reason why the PS4 should have sold the way it has, or still is selling the way it is currently.  They feel like there’s no warrant to it, there’s not really anything Sony is offering with the PS4 right now, for it to be selling like this."

In fact, there is a reason why it's selling, currently, the way it is.  Because there's a dry spell, otherwise it'd be selling more.  :)  Sad you'd make that statement with the video right there, just aching to be listened to again, just to make sure you weren't wrong.  Luckily for me, you didn't do your due diligence.

You caught the right sentence and still can't see it?! Please look at the underlined. Can you deny he was talking about PS4 today / currently / right now?

And, before you tell me he was also talking about the PS4 in the past, he may, but that's not what sundin13 raised questions about, which was what Dr.Henry_Killinger has quoted and then I quoted after him. So please don't dodge the issue.

But it IS selling well. Period. Dot. The end. It's outsold its predecessor like mad during the same timeframe. Same for the Xbox 360. It's outselling both during its first summer. What would be an acceptable sales level for you? 300k weekly? 400k? PS4's "anaemic" sales are an indicator of what time of the year it is, not a referendum on the state of the console. This isn't a bad thing, it's a historical trend. Anyone who thought those incredible sales would continue through the first summer drought doesn't understand the industry. And anyone who doesn't think they'll see a massive spike this fall is insane, same goes for X1.

Again: current sales are NOT anaemic. End of story.

The fact that it's doing better than the PS3 was doing really isn't much of an argument - the PS3 struggled during its first year. So did the Xbox 360.

An "acceptable level" might have been 150-200k. You seem to think it's an all-or-nothing thing. I didn't say that it's selling poorly. I said it's anaemic - meaning, not nearly as good as it should be.

Let me demonstrate it another way. People mostly considered the Wii a "dying" console by 2011. And yet, in the last full week of June 2011, the Wii sold 155k. 159k the week before that, and 173k the week before that. Now, it's true that it got a price cut about a month earlier... but when have you known a dying console to get a massive boost from a price cut? Consider that the price cut for the Xbox One only got it a small bump.

And I haven't said a word about what will happen "this fall". I'm talking about what's happening now. And it's not the "summer drought", as demonstrated by the fact that other consoles didn't see nearly this big a drop. Demonstrated by the fact that PS4 had a launch far bigger than the PS3, got to 6.7 million by end of March compared with 2.85 million for PS3 (that's 135% better), yet is only outpacing PS3 in weekly sales by about 70%. For Wii, it was at 5.8 million by the end of March, and it sold 278k in the last week of June. 360 was at 2.4 million and sold 79k. DS was at 4.5 million and sold 100k (about same as PS4) while PSP was at 1.8 million and sold 95k.

Just to give you a sense of how these numbers stack up, here's the percentage of March install base that weekly sales at the end of June represent:

DS -  2.22%
PSP -  5.28%
360 - 3.29%
Wii - 4.79%
PS3 - 2.14%

PS4 - 1.57%
XBO - 1.60%

I've left off Wii U because it was extremely atrocious, well below 1%. I've also left off PSV and 3DS because except for PSV in Japan, both systems launched in the year in question, whereas all of the ones I listed launched in or near November of the year before in at least two regions.

What the percentages above demonstrate is drought sales relative to hype sales. PS4 had a huge amount of hype at launch. Its summer drought sales, on the other hand, were quite poor by comparison. Which would be fine, if it weren't for the fact that this represents a significant slowdown in summer weekly sales relative to the previous gen.

DUDE! Watch the quote trees!

Please explain yourself. Are you complaining about me removing some older parts of the quote trees (so that they don't become giant) or are you telling me I'm not addressing what I'm quoting?

No. There's a rule about the amount of quote trees you're allowed to have.

The guy is totally correct and he is also rubbing it in.

So yeah I just cut down all those quote trees.

As has been said already, keep them down. Maximum of 3 per post. Thanks.

Yes, when you parse entire sentences to fit your assertions, it most certainly looks that way.  However, when taken in context, he's clearly talking about both arguments, past and present (otherwise, he would've just said he was talking about the present).  Notice, I didn't just parse the quotation to satisfy my needs.  I included it all.
